The correct use of the verbs ser and estar is one of the biggest problems that Spanish students have. However, we are going to give you some clues to know which verb to use in each case.
BE: is used to express essential qualities or permanent characteristics of the subject
Example: Juan is tall. Juan es alto
BE: is used to express characteristics or transient states that depend on circumstances.
Example: Juan is sleeping. Juan esta durmiendo
