This article discussing, in part, the different perspectives of American Jewish college students is worth reading.

And it dovetails with something I have noticed lately among pro-Palestinian folks, which is their use of Palestine-supporting Jewish students as cover for what seems to me clearly anti-semitic views.

Of course individual conscience reigns supreme, and any individual, obviously including Jewish people, can legitimately hold whatever views seem to them most correct. And I have no compunction in saying that there are good reasons to criticize the Israeli government, to question their choice of actions, and to be deeply dismayed by the suffering of the people of Gaza.

And yet these folks are being used by the pro-Palestinian side. "How can we be anti-semitic" they ask, "when we have Jews on our side."

But they use the presence of these allied Jewish students to suggest that support for Gaza is the real, mainstream, dominant Jewish perspective, which it is not.

And these Jewish students are not people they truly want to be friends with, but useful props. They are, in the minds of the Pro-Palestinian side, tame Jews. Because the Pro-Palestinian side is, by and large anti-semitic, they don't truly like these good Jews. The moment they step off the intellectual plantation, they will just be dirty Jews again.

This is not unusual; it's a normal human behavior, to be expected and predicted rather than surprised by. It's no different than the Klansman who is "friends" with a black person who obligingly plays the Step 'n Fetchit role. Or the bigot who rants about "wetbacks" but likes his illegal immigrant gardner that he pays under the table.

I don't know what a Jewish student who is sincerely opposed to Israel's actions in Gaza can do. They should not abandon their own conscience, but they should be wary of being used and remain aware that they will always be under suspicion and accepted only so long as they mouth the correct Palestine-supporting slogans.

But for the rest of us, don't be fooled by the frequent highlighting of pro-Palestinian Jewish students. They are not representative of the American Jewish community as a whole. They are a distinct minority within that community. And while they have an inalienable right to their perspective, the purposeful highlighting of them is a conscious propaganda maneuver designed to mislead us about the overall perspective of American Jews.
