We all have more things to do than time in the day, and we all wish we could accomplish more. Hint: You will never get everything you want done in one day. There is always more work you could have done, so get over it. :)
So what do we do?
Writing down a list of todos is a great start. Using an outliner like Knomni.com lets you organise your massive list of todos into a categories that you can actually use and find again later.
But to actually get things done, you need to schedule them.
Luckily, there is a simple way to accomplish this in Knomni. Right click the item you want to schedule and select “Schedule”. Now select the day you will do this, not the day it’s due, but when you want to start working on it. If the task will take several days, select the first day, or better yet, break down the bigger project into sub-tasks and schedule each sub-task.
When you hover over items with due dates, you will see the date on the item at the far right.
Now you can go to the Todos view by clicking TODOS at the top of the page or the dropdown menu in mobile view, or by pressing Ctrl-Y in desktop view. Todos are organised by overdue, today, tomorrow and so on.
Each morning and several times a day, go through your list of todos and get something done. Also remember to go through your outline and schedule more items to replace the ones you’ve accomplished. Don’t be afraid to schedule things far into the future as reminders. It’s great to schedule things like changing furnace filter, renewing driver’s license, etc., which are easy to forget without reminders.
Make sure you move a reasonable number of items into your Today pile. If you move too many, you will feel disappointed that you didn’t accomplish the list. Crossing off the items done, though fairly pointless because you will probably delete them as well, creates a sense of accomplishment and makes many people feel better.
An even better way to work with the Today pile is to create an event in your calendar app and actually schedule when in the day you will work on this item. A google calendar integration is coming soon with Knomni for people that prefer to track todos in a calendar like this, which I personally find very useful.
I hope this helps you get things done. If you have some other ideas or best practices, please let us know how we can help in the comments.
