When I was a kid we talked about "Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me". Now our society has created this false idea that you should be hurt by what other people think and say. We have even created new terms to validate this idea. "Hate Speech, Cyber Bullying, Hostile Environments". Which is "normalizing" being offended by words?

I have no desire to hurt anyone's feeling or offend them, but I am very concerned with this generation of people who are being taught they have no control over their feelings. If someone says something they don't like they have a huge reaction as if something has been done to them. Most of the time, people are just talking and are NOT going out of their way to offend you. People will make jokes. People will have different opinions from you. People will think how they think and be how they’ll be, and most likely, it has nothing to do with you. So, why give people who say hurtful things your power? Why allow something you have no control over to impact your mental state? Take a moment and consider the words that offended you and ask yourself, is there something I should learn from this? Is it true? Is there a source? After considering the validity of the person's statement you have a choice. You can choose to disregard the offending comment, or you can decide if it is valid. Mature people do not allow others to control them, and they don’t give someone else power over them. They don’t say things like, “My boss makes me feel bad,” because they understand that they are in control of their own emotions and they have a choice how to respond.

What others say about you isn't about you, it is about them. They can only speak through their own perception which does not reflect on you. If I say, "All Green People are Rapists." does that make it true? No, it is just a perception of the speaker and it speaks much more about the speaker than the listener.

Why don't we teach our kids that they can not control the thoughts and feeling of others and they DO control their own reactions? This is a true and healthy scenario.

I am worried about a whole generation that is being taught that words are more important than actions and that emotion is more important than intellect. Mentally strong people don’t sit around feeling sorry about their circumstances or how others have treated them. Instead, they take responsibility for their role in life and understand that life isn’t always easy or fair.

Consider that it’s always easier to defend someone’s right to say something with which you agree. But in a free society, you also have a duty to defend speech to which you may strongly object.
My post is not intended to give offensive people a voice, rather give sensitive people the knowledge they have a choice. After all, we can only control ourselves.

This is very true of Generation Y or Z or whatever you want to call us. Millenials and pre-millenials. I actually think a lot of it is due to social intelligence being stunted by our addictions to technologies. Here's Simon Sinek explaining it

I had a lady mad I offered her free candy once at work. Took her three minutes to get her off her soapbox.

What was she angry at in particular?

That I offered her ungodly candy.

Interesting. So is it tainted by the halloween association?

Not at all. She was just anti-candy because she was diabetic. And informed me for the next three or four minutes why and how she didn't consume candy.

Must've been some special candy.

It was laffytaffy.

Damn, that stuff looks delicious.

Strawberry flavored one is my weakness.

jerk my self lol 😂😂😂

@whatsup you are really pumped up about this new forum at chainbb, you really want to express yourself.

I'm looking forward to some interesting discussions. :-)

You are right, whatever happens in your life, this does not give you the right to tear your anger at others and insult anyone. We all need to learn to control ourselves and our emotions. Thank you @whatsup

Also noteworthy, there is no "Trending List" on ChainBB

Trending is decided on activity. How quaint. :-)

@whatsup,
I hope to be stay away from ChainBB! Coz I won't make more troubles with someone unknown! Anyway I hope to take a look, sometimes it might have interesting topics!

Cheers~

Wait, listening and actual thinking, do people still do those kind of things :O?

this forum thing is going to be awesome

I'm for freedom of speech, but I'm even more for Respect for others. And yes, we cannot control others, therefore we shall deal with our environment in a way it is best for us, for our own health, our own mindset. But, that doesn't mean that we shall teach not only our kids, the younger generation, but also the grownups what respect means, and how this can help to be more fortunate (in any way) in life when showing and having respect for others. Even here on Steemit I sometimes miss that respect. In chat the other day I was giving my opinion on some post that was another opinion than some others had and they wanted me to start upvoting the post (since it was downvoted). Since I was ok with the downvote for this particualr post and didn't know the exact behaviour of this users wrt hs alleged downvote culture, multiple people started calling me names and all when I insisted for proof if they wanted me to help them upvoting this post. They simply told me: go look for yourself. Rude and not helpful with the idea they could convince me. I really don't understand this kind of people. One even mentioned to me she was 59 or 60 years of age. So, yeh, respect is something that needs to be thought to some of the older generation as well, unfortunately.

I am excited to checkout ChainBB and hope it is worthly

Great video. I think it started with your generation, but what is interesting is how it has spread. I guess we have to see if it begins to correct it's self or if this skill set will somehow evolve into normalacy.
