Thank you for inviting me here, even if it took a year. A lot of shifts had to be made to make room for the awesomeness that is our Present (moment).
I look forward to translating intense tech talk and the passion for blockchain/ cryptocurrency for the laymen, which I am. I have the patience and the desire to learn and share what's new and benefiting peoples lives.

Sometimes an honest comment that took you 3 minutes to write can earn way more than a post that took you 3 hours. It's all about the value you provide to another person, which is all subjective.

I know the feeling, there are so many uses but what I really love to do is compose music :)) especially for film. As a kid we had these narrated books with early synthesizer sound effects and music. I loved it. And still until today I smile when I hear synths in old 70-80's movies.

The more I read your posts, the more I respect your way of writing and of thinking. Empathy is becoming a rare commodity on the internet and I am happy to feel some empathy in the way you write. I hope I am right and not making a mistake.
Being real is a quality that disappears and it frightens me.
Reading some of your comments gives me hope and I am thankful for that.

Like all humans, I am flawed. I have moments of selfishness, and moments of selflessness. I struggle with fear, and paranoia. For me the battle really is fear vs. love. So, I am trying not to run away from people who are full of love....
this is the battle and I would guess that I am no different from most people on earth, with this one exception: I am willing to admit it all.

What makes you special it that you are willing to admit that like all humans, you are flawed, have moments of selfishness and of selflessness. I feel so relieved I can say the same about myself, except I don’t feel special about me.
You are trying not to run away from people who are full of love …
I am trying not to run away from people who are full of fear because fear leads to hate and hate consume us all.
I want to believe that most people on earth are no different but that they don’t always know how to express their feelings.

Couldn't agree with you more. I have been a curious developer since my high school. I tried to recreate the first stage of Dave game using BASIC programming language and was successful enough to take it to a stage where people could play and complete the first level. I am also interested in language especially english and kannada.
I know so many developers who can code away in their silhos but wouldn't dare to speak to people explain even the basic of what they are are doing. I also know writers who can connect with people through their writing but get scared of anything that is remotely related to technology.
So I feel you when you say that there is a huge need for people who can act as "Glue" between these two categories. Since I am comfortable in both I see the opportunities that you mention in your post. I am just getting started with Steemit and will be more active going forward. I hope I can add value to both the categories you are mentioning.

Funny you should write about this today...
Earlier, I was pondering how the precise reason I got out of the business of being a "technical writer" in the IT industry was precisely that everyone wanted me to be a coder, not a writer. Sure I got decent enough at coding web pages-- it was part of the gigs-- but soon enough it seemed like the requirement for "writing" gigs (I worked as a contractor) was really 90% coding and 10% creating content. And I recognized that I had sold out...
I'm a writer, not a coder...
I ended up in usability and human factors for a while... and made it onto the "most hated" lists with developers for being that annoying person who would take "perfectly elegant" code and insist that it actually needed to DO something "real world users" would adopt. The GALL!
So yeah... from where I'm sitting, one of the things Steemit could use is more people who can explain to the devs how "real people" (aka non-technologists) actually use the web. As I try to get more people to try Steemit, I keep hearing that it's "too complicated." Elsewhere, things are a drag and drop widget driven system... not so much here.
Thanks for a thoughtful post!

Interesting. With all that I said, I forgot to mention that I never thought Steemit was too complex, MAINLY BECAUSE I WAS ALWAYS ON IT. I viewed it as the new amazing place that I was going to crack........one mysterious thing led to another, and I remember thinking it was great. I do remember when I had to teach myself Markup even to make a post, and I thought that was a bit absurd. But i just sucked it up, and learned Markup.....I guess people who have never done any coding or anything computer related would find it all too complicated, but I saw it as a challenge, and something interesting.

Personally, I never found it "complicated" since I used to code web pages; I create all my posts in HTML, but I did think it a bit "weird" that a 2016 social site would not be all "slick and modern."
My concern was more about what it might mean for "mass adoption;" will those who expect "plug and play" be disappointed and leave. Hopefully not... and I expect true mass adoption is probably 2-3 years out, anyway... so the interface will undergo many changes between now and then.

Love this article. ANd the thing is what you are saying, I felt the same way. I'm still going to try to learn coding because I begin school again for my IT degree in August but you're right...when I was a web developer, the majority of people had no idea what the hell they wanted. A lot of times, I never got paid and for the work that most of them wanted me to do, the time it took, just didn't match the money. I feel your frustration. LOL I'd rather put my podcasts out on STEEMIT. :)

From my own experience, it really does take a team. Some programmers should be allowed to focus on the code. It's so important to have folks that can translate between the programmers and other folks. But too often, programmers are expected to do it all.

To be able to bridge this gap, I learned to draw.
However, what I found is that people still couldn't grasp the future concept I was trying to explain.
While trying to gauge interest in a project, people would just tell me to build it, and then they would give me feedback. I doubt they realized that what they said meant, "go forth and waste the next two years of your life, and then come back and I will give you a minute of my time." And they called themselves friends.
Now, my drawing skill comes in handy when I am asked to make cabinets for people. I can draw what I intend to build, and thus get close to what they actually want.

Outstanding post. I have been musing the same thing lately. Should I learn to code to cash in on this incredible paradigm shift involving the block-chain? My Dad wanted me to be a programmer and I took a few classes in college. I can do it but definitely don't enjoy it. At that time I was only one of 2 girls in the computer programming class! I changed my major to biology and was very happy I did. So again I decided don't learn to do something you don't love. I love living the ranch life and showing people my passion.

Interesting, we had similar paths and experiences up until the part you decided to walk from the website development world... 17 years in, I'm still doing it. I don't like it either, but it's paid the bills. All the kooky websites ideas I build just never clicked. So I stayed on the path of what I knew. I'm just now starting to wander off in new directions again.

I enjoyed HTML when I was younger right up until we went from using the notepad to Dreamweaver and then it all became about “how things look” and I got bored in that class lol.
I think in the not too long future everyone will just learn basic program skills in school just like Math, English (whatever writing class in your own language), and all the others subjects if they are not already requiring it. I would have preferred that over being forced to learn a second language that I never did learn how to speak. Those where some rather embarrassing times in my life saying and misspeaking what I never understood…

Great post, @stellabelle! My first love was writing but then I realized that it was hard to make money at it, so I ventured into teaching myself how to code because I thought it was a very useful skill that would become even more so in the future. I can code now but wouldn't say I'm a superstar at it or anything. I mainly work on vr projects in the Unity game engine, which I enjoy.
Finding steemit though has been really good for me because it kind of puts the value back onto the writer, artist, creator....something that I felt was not as valued in this world so had to inhibit more within myself in favor of enhancing other skills like coding.
It's true that there are other soft skills, like communication, as you've mentioned that are really important when it comes to tech, and the people who have those good soft skills can help to close that divide between those that build the tech and those that use it.

Great article! Personally, I find Python the easiest programming language to learn for beginners, the syntax is very straightforward and easy to pick up through online videos. Also another advantage of Python is that there are a ton of resources and you could even do cool stuff with Steem with it through Steem's Python library.

I used to want to have my own website for the longest time and also wished to generate money off it. I didn't even know what type of website it would be. I thought that if I came up with a cool domain name it will all come together somehow. I believe I tried a couple of times and the names were taken already, which is probably a blessing in disguise because of the potential time and money that could have been wasted on the endeavor. In the future I believe humans can be augmented by computer maybe even quantum computers. The best way to describe it would be like how Elon Musk talks about a neural lace, you would be connected brain to cloud to internet or quantum computer network - essentially leveling the playing field for everyone. I tell people this and I usually get a negative reaction to it, but that's how I envision the future!

I think the main issue is that you learned this on a vacum. People need constant feedback on their work, and trying to do everything yourself can be dawnting. First off, you learned off a book, and I bet the book didnt had a forum or chat that will assist you when you didnt understood the difference between STRONG and B or why you should use EM instead of PX.
Here is one of the things that would have help you even in the 2000s.
http://www.csszengarden.com/
and
https://www.sitepoint.com/
Of course is 2017, and the youtube era hit like 10 years ago, so now learning to code can be done much more easier with online classrooms like.
http://railsforzombies.org/
or https://www.codeschool.com/
Or even playing games... because gamification...
https://code.org/
Now here are two different things, being a coder, and a professional coder. If you want to be a freelancer coder, you need to know your shit, which means, know how to deal with clients, know the way they think and prepare to battle for cash. Meaning, show them a contract, ask for an advanced. And make some requriments, to set boundaries.
Your pricing strategy (working per hour or per project) is really big difference. Anyway, experiences can vary from being very good to very frustrating depending how you approach your clients.
Personal branding is important and I think you know enough to learn about it. Artistic and creative people usually used to be pushed by their own rules but dont react well to outside pressure, or maybe they do but that can vary. So althought I understood why your experience wasn't great. I would like to remind you that coding is awesome, not because is against clients, but against computers, and beating computers is great. Just like beating a Bowser with a Italian plumber.

If you have an idea for an app or website you can hire a coder. But coming up with an idea for the killer app is priceless. There is a guy who was making a living buying things and selling them on amazon and ebay. He wanted an app on his phone to scan barcodes and give him the price on amazon to decide if he should buy the item for resell. He hired somebody on rentacoder or something to create the app. That app was a huge hit and he made the coder his business partner. Now they have a full time business.

It sounds cliche, but it's now what you know, it's who you know, and do what you love and the money will follow. Steemit is the perfect vehicle for those two cliches to be reality.

One thing is for sure, you really were ahead of your time - being a web designer in 2000's, just like joining steemit in its beginnings.. How do you dig out these gems?

@stellabelle, nice story you shared! I believe, you are absolutely right, that there needs to be a mediator between these two entities. Nice to see, that someone turned that in to a working business(?). :)

Thanks for the story. Sorry to hear that coding wasn't for it. It can go beyond website creation and design.
I think that coding will continue to get easier and easier until its the newest blue-collar job.

I also remember Dreamweaver but I hated it, very non-user friendly.
Fortunately Wordpress came along and made everything much easier...

Great post, you have nice writing skills as well. I hope it works out for you here better than designing websites. Good that you stopped doing what you hate. What decentralized autonomous organizations do you work for? Is this work you do next to being here on steemit?

btw, the reason i have not been voting for you: I have been sick! I am only on Steem Maintenance schedule, which means, i am only tending to my own blog replies and voting for the following groups: Provenezuela, steemgigs, all Venezuela writing posts, anyone who sends me an email redeeming their Stellabelle coin, and that's about it....and Dan, EOS stuff of which I'm obsessesed about....I really haven't done too much reading, and i disabled my bot...but don't worry...nothing has changed. You're reading too much into it.

The truly insane thing is all of the wacky stories out there about people whacking together crappy websites for businesses back in the late 90s/early 00s for $tens-of-thousands-of-dollars... and getting away with it. But those are just stories now. That ship's sailed. I was too stupid to grab that easy money because, fuck, it was just too bloody easy. Money is supposed to be difficult and make our lives hell, right? I was sooo wrong about that. It's only like that if you want it to be like that, because maybe someone poured that sort of bullshit into your ears when you were young because they didn't know any better either. I'm stoked this thing is working out for you now. Your decidedly "oldskool" wrongland idea was brilliant, still brilliant.

I recently started working as a freelancer (few months ago) and already tired of constant changes in the project. Some times I think of the money I will get just to make it easier for my self, but the truth remains that it is hard to just delete a code you just wrote.

SOme of us are better of not wasting our tiime learning code and programming UNLESS we enot it and have fun with it!
BUT ONESTLy you SHOULD NOT have to make yoruself learn IT web devellopment and pprogramming lagages if thats noot what u like!

@stellabelle u should encoruage more people to focus on ART insted of MATh if THATS what they like! and for peopel who DO enjoy programming of ccourse you shouldd learn it!
BUT many many many peeople will never be productive with programing languages and cooding compared to expeirncd coders who do it for FUN!

"I want to have all my votes cast by me, a human." good for you @stellabelle.
I didn't study coding, I did SEO, and quickly lost the desire to do that (I got my wife's business pages ranking first though. Busy spouse = food on the table).
Then I studied marketing & copywriting, and quickly lost the desire to do that (after I created a marketing campaign for my wife's business).
Hmm, there seems to be a pattern developing.
Maybe now I can do something for me?

Heyo and neato, fellow verbal more than STEM user! I don't speak any programming languages... I mean, I took a class in C++ and BASIC in the 90s, but very little of it stuck.
10 If programmingknowledge>0 then GOTO 20 else GOTO 10
is infinitely recurring.
I do speak puns, though. Do you? I'm promoting my pun contest (now in week 4, and very, very amusing) Wanna join in? https://steemit.com/contest/@improv/pun-contest-week-3-winners-and-week-4-begins
