According to the Gospel of Luke, Jesus spoke to his disciples about the mysteries of the Kingdom of God, the empire or dominion of the divine perfections, during the Passover meal. For Jesus, the Last Supper was a very special moment, because there he left his disciples the last instructions and teachings that they should follow before his crucifixion.
And among these spiritual mysteries, Jesus spoke to his disciples about the rewards promised in the Sermon on the Mount, for following him faithfully; because many until that moment had abandoned Jesus, like the rich young man who moved by curiosity and not by the fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion) wanted to inherit the gift of eternal life.
Because for Jesus a new Israel had to be established, not an Israel according to the flesh, that is, on the physical descendants of Abraham, but a new Israel according to the spirit through the spiritual gifts of the holy spirit.
With these words, the divine teacher revealed to his disciples the great promise that they had in store: "You have stayed with me in all my troubles. So I will give you the right to rule as kings, just as my Father has given me the right to rule as a king" Luke 22:28-29.
And this spiritual reward had a very important significance for the disciples. Because the title of king is related to the holy spirit, the King is the opposite figure to the tyrant; being a king essentially means ruling in the name of God, as were David, Solomon, and Hezekiah. The King is the one who, through the righteous life, imposes the law of God in human society. In this way, Jesus assigned his disciples their new role as missionaries and teachers of the Church, an institution that would be born later with Pentecost.
