Most people don't know the reason why they breath heavily after exercise or after doing anything stressful. This is caused by the build up of Lactic acid which is poisineous and makes the muscles ache. Therefore, oxygen is needed to breakdown or get rid of the lactic acid which is why an athlete continues to breath heavily even after the exercise is over. The oxygen needed to get rid of the lactic acid in the muscle is known as the Oxygen Debt.

Lactic acid doesn’t actually build up but lactate does. See this link on lactic acid myths. When you exercise your body uses more oxygen. To compensate for this oxygen demand your breathing has to increase.
