Feeling rather proud
The other day I did a post on LinkedIn inviting beta testers to a new Excel Community. It's not the first post I have done about something steem related to Linkedin. But this time the post gained a bit of traction.
This post has now received 4808 views and a number of comments and a lot of direct messages back and forth with people showing an interest.
You can check out the post here and if you are on Linkedin, please do share it

As a direct result, I have set up and delegated to 13 accounts and another 4 have applied for accounts directly, two of which have been issued for sure. The conversion rate is only 0.35% but I am going to be honest, its more than I expected.
Now I just need them to subscribe and become active. This is not easy either as I have set up plenty of accounts myself for people that have taken up an offer of a free steem account. I set up 26 for the learn and earn activities on my Wordpress blog. I have not checked, but very few have ever used them. I think i might be getting more traction from guest accounts via steempress.
That leaves with me a question, why do so many people set up accounts and never become active? This problem is not new to steem. I have students that pay for courses and never start them. But not at the same levels as the inactive accounts on steem. @arcange produces daily stats showing new accounts with an active/inactive breakdown and the story is not pretty.

What, if anything, can we do to improve this? In the past, we had put some of it down to delays in getting accounts, but I am having the same results and there is no delay on my side.
This is how communities should be used, as funnels.I am hoping that there are better options for building a community UI and UX as an end user owner later so they become more visually appealing.

This is great, @paulag. It’s a good start! I am hoping it will get easier when signup and on boarding are more user friendly. But here’s my thought in the meantime. What if there was a way to direct new users to communities based on their interests? The simplest way for now might be to write a post that lists the most engaging communities and how to get involved. Then each time you set up a new account you could point the user to the post to find the niche that interests them.
My humble opinion is that most people don’t initially understand the value of building a Steem portfolio, and the learning curve is too high. But you give someone a community where they can join and start sharing their own ideas, and BAM. They will see the value.
Steem is a little bit like the Smithsonian. It’s huge and overwhelming and tough to know where to start! But once you find an area of interest, you can immerse in it. Maybe not the best analogy, but you get the idea. 😁
And as @tarazkp said, it’s got to be more visually appealing. One day!

What you describe will come rather soon with communities. I saw @ roadscape is working on it. There is an open issue on github which will make a big difference when completed, I believe, for newcomers. The initial impact of the communities have been on his mind even at Steemfest presentation.

Steem is difficult, but it shouldn't be. It only is because everyone wants to earn. Content consumers dont really care.

Converting new Steemians to engaged Steemians is a challenge. I think communities could help with this as they can follow a topic they are interested in rather than having to find people. I hope some of those you signed up will be active.
Happy new year and have a !BEER.

That's great to see and hear about Paula! You asked them as beta testers. Give them something to do! Invite them to test the beta, with precise actions to do and expected feedback! Reward their effort and teach them how to take advantage of the reward, not to run to the market and sell it as soon as it's liquid.

Great to see the same movers and shakers still in Steem and I checked your linkedin post because that is where i am most active these days.
The issue with starting and remaining active is a problem in all kinds of communities.
How to motivate people to start.

Yeps I'm on linkedin way more that steem too, thanks for checking out the post. If we could get only a small % of linkedin people active on steem it could start a snowball
