Overcoming Setbacks
After my song One of Us came out, I knew I needed to do some more promotion.
My blog outreach for the song didn’t land as well as I hoped. Apart from a few friendly rejections, I did not hear back from anybody.
That’s OK - blogs take time. When facing a promotional problem, I turned to my most reliable weapon: Soundcloud. The tactic in this case was messaging other users and asking them if they want a repost trade.
—
"Hey [username], how is it going? Are you available for a 48 hour repost trade, aka I post your song for 48 hours and you do for me too?
After my first 2.3k followers I have learned that this is a good way to boost listens / reach more people in an organic way. If you are down, I'd doing my new track One of Us - indie/electronic left-of-center stuff
here's the track, you down?”
—
I sent a few hundred messages similar to the above, using slight variations in wording to avoid triggering the spam filter.
Some people said yes, most didn’t reply, a few responded emphatically with a “I hate repost trading!” sort of NO.
Is Repost Trading Bad?
When a few users responded referring to this activity as “repost trading,” I blew it off at first. It’s just an offer to do a short repost trade so we can both reach a few more listeners… what is the harm, I figured?
Of course it was not long before my mind started drawing parallels to Steemit… I have posted many angry comments against “follow for follow” and “upvote for upvote” here.
Is “repost for repost” any different? It seems clear that it is not.
I found myself in the shoes of a newbie making a basic mistake. The same kind of mistake that I often get annoyed about over here.
Soundcloud vs. Steemit - What I Learned
Here’s how I approach Steemit: Create good posts every day, respond to the comments, engage with the community and get involved, plus stay informed about new features.
On Soundcloud, I’ve put in a lot of time, yet get much worse results. I realize now it is because I was using all the wrong tactics: Repost-for-Repost, trying to garner attention for my own posts, not listening to other people’s content, etc.
In other words I wasn’t being nearly generous enough on Soundcloud. I plan to spend a lot more time listening to other users’ songs and commenting on them, not asking for anything in return, stuff like that.
If I treat Soundcloud like Steemit - a community to engage in - I think there are great results to be had.
No More Cold Calls?
Does this mean “cold calling” is dead? No more reaching out to people I don’t know yet?
I do not think so. Instead, it means I only reach out to people if I really listen and enjoy their music.
A message like “hey [user] do you want to repost?” is no good… but something like “hey [user] I listened to [your song] and liked [this part] - we have compatible styles, do you want to try to work together somehow? I’m down for promotional or musical collaboration, whatever…”
That kind of thing is more personal, it shows I actually listened, and is much more likely to get some result or at least a pleasant response.
I will be experimenting more with this kind of outreach… we’ll see how it goes. So far I got one great repost from somebody with nearly 5k followers, it netted me more than 100 new listens… so far so good with that.
What About You?
Do you use Soundcloud? Have you had any luck connecting with other users or communities there? how?
Finally got around to listening to your song. I can dig it. It has a bit of Deerhoof vibe to it. Dropped you a like and a follow, I'll check out some more of your music later.

I don't know if I have "good" music taste, at least by most people's standards, but I do have a taste for music, haha.

I hear some Deerhoof in there too. And maybe a touch of Radiohead? Nicely done.

Interesting ideas! I've been growing a podcast/syndicated radio show on SoundCloud for house/techno for nearing 5 years. Initially I was one of those jackasses that gained followers by following others. That tactic is mostly pointless these days but years ago even though it was rather annoying, it worked. One of the things I did was find a fellow DJ with a very similar sound to me, then go through their follower list adding their fans. I have found, just in my personal experience, that targeting LISTENERS is paramount.
One thing I see often is artists trying to garner approval from other artists. It's great for community-building but doesn't seem to build large followings. Reposts are, of course, important but another thing I found helpful was adding a guest mix portion of the show and getting that guest artist to repost the episode as well. With smaller artists this impact is minimal, but as I have grown the show the guests have had larger and larger followings. This has a huge impact on play counts, reposts, and downloads. So much so that my play counts have doubled year over year since I started. To sustain that growth I have to have 500,000 plays in 2017. It's looking like I can hit that. My approach has been, instead of asking other artists to merely repost, showcase their work directly on my channel... I've been surprised by how easy it is to build momentum by targeting smaller-followed artists, to mid, then to large and work my way up. My first post on SteemIt, I put up a back episode of my show with Nick Warren. He has 83,000 followers. His repost has pushed that episode over 25,000 plays!
Probably my biggest mistake over all these years was allowing people to download my sets and shows "for free." I currently use a download wall plugin that requires listeners to follow me and repost the track if they want to download it. To be honest, downloads have dropped off dramatically BUT I retain followers much better this way. Through this method alone I've been adding about 10 followers per day and have only used it for a month. The site I use is https://theartistunion.com/ I do not pay for any of there promotional services, the download wall is service they offer for free.
Looking back on my response, my method isn't exactly based on generosity, but it has been very effective, I'm over 8,000 followers and more than half of those have been in the last year. I don't spend hours sending out messages asking for reposts, I barely post on Facebook or Twitter about the shows... it may not work for everyone, but it's working for me. www.soundcloud.com/brian-bacchus

Wow! That's amazing that you have worked up to so many plays. I've done stuff like you described with following the fans of another artist - it works to get more followers on Soundcloud still, but IDK that they are likely to listen to the music later on.
The guest mix thing is smart! Good idea, I hope it keeps working for you.

Thanks, and hopefully something similar can work for you too! Following for follows doesn't necessarily bring in active fans too much, and quite honestly I'm trying to figure out how to increase engagement from my existing fan base. I can get thousands of plays per episode and still only a few comments. One of the causes for that is embedding the show (like on my SteemIt post) or using SoundCloud's RSS feature to pipe it out to iTunes.
Since you're a musician and not a DJ it might make collaboration more difficult... maybe do a monthly "mixtape" sort of thing where you work with other artists to do a compilation and the other artists repost? Your sales pitch to the other artists can be that every artist on the mixtape is reposting it so all those fanbases cross-pollinate. Just spitballin'

I'm surprised you didn't see the correlation between "upvote for upvote" and "repost for repost" from the get go, haha. Although technically it would be more like "resteem for resteem" but that seems to be a much less popular form of spam here.
I've used soundcloud for years. When I first started making music it was in the chiptune community, back when 8BC was still a thing. At that time I was getting decent plays, comments, and even some downloads for someone who had no idea what he was doing. But I slowly moved away from making chiptune, and I really dislike promoting myself, so my plays and interactions went way, way down since those days. Not that I minded really, I was only releasing some experiments and stuff like that, it was never meant to be an actual project.
That being said, I've been working on an actual project that I'd like to get off the ground at some stage and only last night mastered and uploaded a demo recorded last year through a terrible headphone mic into my iPod. In fact I was going to DM you in chat for some advice and constructive criticism at some point.
Your strategy to treat soundcloud like steemit is a great idea. My only problem is that, much like steemit, I find it difficult to find stuff I really enjoy. Also, I still hate promoting myself, haha.
Anyway, I'm going to give your song a listen and follow you with my new project's account in a little bit, I just want to find headphones some headphones first.

" "resteem for resteem" but that seems to be a much less popular form of spam here"
Which is weird, because a resteem usually results in more votes than just that 1 person's upvote.

I think the value of a resteem is dependent on an account's followers. I doubt that one of my resteems would get anyone any votes, but a resteem from a big account could net you some serious votes.

You know not a lot of people really enjoy promoting themselves... I definitely do not enjoy loading up hundreds of different Soundcloud profiles searching for decent music, messaging people who mostly do not reply, etc etc, BUT, you gotta do what you gotta do if you want music to reach people.
then again IDK because my songs only reach a thousand listens right now usually so maybe I am wrong.

I don't disagree. Although when it comes to promoting stuff on soundcloud I prefer to posting links on other sites where appropriate. But I'm more interested in feedback at this stage than trying to increase stats, I hope all that will come with time and effort.

Nice post/article. There's some great information/lessons here. I am also a musician and I went thru some very similar experiences a few years ago. Only I paid someone to help promote me on SC and all he did was "cold call" other SC users on by behalf. This felt wrong to me, so I decided to do my own promotion in a more friendly and organic way. Its a lot slower but it seems like the right way to do things. Anyway, thanks sharing your experiences. I look forward to checking out your music and some more of your posts. Have a great day :)

That's the worst! I hate those weird sketchy promotion services on Soundcloud, a lot of them are very lame. The worst ones are the repost services, "140k+ follow reposts!!" but they're all bots and fake accounts...

Yeah, I agree. They are so sketchy. I thankfully didn't fall for any of those. I did call a small time marketing company and talked to someone on the phone (at great length) about the promo plan he was offering. And as the plan was going along, I thought that it was working well. He had gotten me a lot more views on my music and a lot of new followers. But I knew something was amiss because I wasn't getting very many comments on any of my tracks. And when the promo plan was over, I had amassed 810 followers. About 2 months after finishing the plan, I started posting new music and none of my new tracks got more than 30 plays. So at that point I knew for sure that those 800+ followers were mostly fake followers. Sorry for the long reply. Thanks for getting back to me. Talk to you again soon.

Oh, another thing I learned very recently, sort of off topic but it does influence your play counts... If you're first uploading tracks as private and then make them public later, it absolutely kills your organic distribution to your own followers. One of my most avid listeners actually sent me a message telling me that even though he only followed 5 DJs, my work NEVER appeared in his feed, and suggested I only upload when I intended to make the set public. After switching to this tactic he confirmed it was appearing in his feed AND initial play counts within the first 48 hours have been much higher.
