God in his wisdom and infinite Providence bestows his spiritual gifts, his perfections, to men, the Bible teaches us. And in a very particular case in the old testament, the Bible shows us how God protects David through the spirit of prophecy, when Saul tries to kill him. Saul is a warrior king of Israel and a person of unstable spirits, an unpredictable person.
David had defeated Goliath, consolidating the power of Saul on the throne of Israel, but David had also become an annoying person for his popularity with the people, for the King. David, again, as in the case of Goliath, he must face an enemy that surpasses him in power and strength, and yet he is victorious.
David teaches us the importance of trusting God, as the proverb explains: "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight", Proverbs 3:5-6.
David is a providential leader and God in his wisdom keeps him safe; the prophecy or the gift of prophecy, well understood, it is a true spiritual shield, a form of invisible protection, as David proves it:
"When David had fled and made his escape, he went to Samuel at Ramah and told him all that Saul had done to him. Then he and Samuel went to Naioth and stayed there. Word came to Saul: ´David is in Naioth at Ramah´; so he sent men to capture him. But when they saw a group of prophets prophesying, with Samuel standing there as their leader, the Spirit of God came on Saul's men, and they also prophesied. Saul was told about it, and he sent more men, and they prophesied too. Saul sent men a third time, and they also prophesied. Finally, he himself left for Ramah and went to the great cistern at Seku, And he asked, ´Where are Samuel and David?´
´Over in Naioth at Ramah,´ they said.
So Saul went to Naioth at Ramah. But the Spirit of God came even on him, and he walked along prophesying until he came to Naioth. He stripped off his garments, and he too prophesied in Samuel's presence. He lay naked all that day and all that night. This is why people say, ´Is Saul also among the prophets?´", 1 Samuel 19:18-24.
