Jeremiah against Hananiah: But the prophet who prophesies peace will be recognized as one truly sent by the LORD only if his prediction comes true. Jeremiah 28:9

Jeremiah was a major prophet who preached in the years before the destruction of the Kingdom of Judah by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. Like many prophets, Jeremiah suffered persecution because his words were not pleasing to the ruling class; those who held power at that time, Jeremiah exercised his prophetic ministry during the reigns of Jehoiakim and Zedekiah, only wanted to hear beautiful lies and not to have the constant social sins exposed.
Like all the prophets, Jeremiah taught that the only possible path for the Israelites was sincere conversion to God by accepting a life of righteousness. But the hardness of hearts, as Jeremiah recounted in his book, made listening impossible, as the prophet described the fact with these words: "But these people have stubborn and rebellious hearts; they have turned aside and gone away. They do not say to themselves, ´Let us fear the LORD our God´" Jeremiah 5:23-24.
The situation of the Kingdom of Judah was already decided and God had made Nebuchadnezzar an instrument of punishment for all the nations of the Middle East. And among Jeremiah's most bitter enemies, as the book relates, were the false prophets and priests who made religion a source of profit: "And among the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen something horrible: they commit adultery and live a lie. They strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that not one of them turns from their wickedness" Jeremiah 23:14.
The Book of the Prophet relates that during the reign of Zedekiah, the last king of Judah, lived Hananiah, a false prophet who gave illusory hope to the kingdom of Judah, contradicting all the preaching of Jeremiah. And for this reason, Jeremiah admonished Hananiah, and warned him that his lie would not last long: "But the prophet who prophesies peace will be recognized as one truly sent by the LORD only if his prediction comes true" Jeremiah 28:9. Hananiah, after his confrontation with Jeremiah, died the same year that Jeremiah prophesied his death.
Prophets like Jeremiah are testimony to how God's plan, which is eternal, acts in the history of men.
