Ezekiel was a major prophet who exercised his spiritual ministry at the beginning of the first deportation of Jews to Babylon, more specifically in a town called Tel Aviv. The prophet in his book is called by God "son of man", a title that Jesus would later use to refer to himself, a term that probably means that the prophet personified the perfections of God, his mercy, his righteousness, his wisdom.
And a very interesting passage from the Book of Ezekiel is a poem that represents a lament for the last kings of Judah; most probably these kings were Jehoiachin and Zedekiah, men who did evil in the eyes of God. And like many prophets who left their thoughts written, Ezekiel wrote this poem in a metaphorical way, using elements of everyday life to describe the situation that Israel, the promise of God, had to live in those times.
Ezekiel compared Israel to that vine that in ancient times, probably during the reigns of Solomon and David, bore abundant fruit and was blessed by God:
"Your mother was like a vine in your vineyard
planted by the water;
it was fruitful and full of branches
because of abundant water.
Its branches were strong,
fit for a ruler's scepter.
It towered high
above the thick foliage,
conspicuous for its height
and for its many branches" Ezekiel 19:10-11.
But then the prophet continued with his metaphor, and showed Israel as that vine that was thrown down and that remained withered for not having produced the expected fruits:
"Now it is planted in the desert,
in a dry and thirsty land.
Fire spread from one of its main branches
and consumed its fruit.
No strong branch is left on it
fit for a ruler's scepter" Ezekiel 19:13-14.
This spiritual poem, which has many similarities with some texts from the Book of Isaiah and the Book of Lamentations, is a reminder that the secure life and the prosperity are blessings that belong to men who fear God.
