The prophet Haggai and God: Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with your own house. Haggai 1:9

The Sacred Scriptures in the Book of Ezra relates that Cyrus the Great, king of the Persians and Medes, had conquered the Babylonian empire, and inspired by God, the great king promulgated an edict authorizing the Jews and Benjaminites, the only surviving tribes of Israel, to return to the province of Judea. Guided by Zerubbabel, the first exiles arrived in the city of Jerusalem, with the intention of rebuilding the city, and it was at this time that the preaching of the prophet Haggai began.
As a prophet Haggai taught the importance of the spiritual gift of fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion, and equanimity), because this gift ensures God's blessings such as prosperity and peace; with the fear of God, the order of things always arrives, what must be.
The Book of Haggai relates that God spoke through the prophet to Zerubbabel, governor of Judea, and Joshua, the high priest, about the need to build the second temple of Jerusalem, because God had ordered it so.
And to persuade the persons who should receive the oracle, the prophet remembered that there is no other God than the God of Israel, because he and not other pagan gods is the only one who ensures the rains and the harvest. The threat of idolatry was always present for Israel from its beginnings, and the prophet was quick to mention the importance of fidelity to the God of Israel.
With these words, the oracle of Haggai reminded the Israelites, that sin disturbs the order of things, and that there is no greater good than pleasing God:
"You hoped for rich harvests, but they were poor. And when you brought your harvest home, I blew it away. Why? Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with your own house. It's because of you that the heavens withhold the dew and the earth produces no crops" Haggai 1:9-10.
