The prophet Jeremiah: The LORD has stirred up the kings of the Medes, because his purpose is to destroy Babylon

in prophet •  last year

The prophet Jeremiah developed his prophetic activity during the reigns of the last kings of Judah, before the fall of the city of Jerusalem at the hands of the tyrant Nebuchadnezzar, and during the years after the exile in Babylon. In this context, the prophet wrote a book where he prophesied the future restoration of the nation of Israel, after the fall of the Babylonian empire.
The Babylonian empire represented for the deported Jews a symbol of oppression and injustice, that is why the prophet Jeremiah or most probably his disciples, wrote an oracle against Babylon; just as this empire had arisen, in the same way, it should disappeared, riches and power are deceptive goods, and those who do not put their trust in the Lord are destined to disappear. This was the spiritual message of the prophet to his people.
The prophet Jeremiah mentioned in his oracle the beginning of the liberation of the chosen people with the call by God to Cyrus the Great, king of the Persians and Medes, God had assigned this merciful king a spiritual mission. Just as the Babylonian tyranny symbolized everything that was negative, the Persian empire symbolized the liberation and the security of the exiled; an era of darkness was succeeded by an era of light, this was how divine providence had determined it. In the sacred scriptures, Cyrus, the founder of the Achaemenid dynasty, was one of the best examples of what a benefactor of humanity is.
In this way, Jeremiah prophesied the saving action of Cyrus the Great:
"´The LORD has vindicated us;
come, let us tell in Zion
what the LORD our God has done.´
´Sharpen the arrows,
take up the shields!
The LORD has stirred up the kings of the Medes,
because his purpose is to destroy Babylon.
The LORD will take vengeance,
vengeance for his temple.
Lift up a banner against the walls of Babylon!
Reinforce the guard,
station the watchmen,
prepare an ambush!
The LORD will carry out his purpose,
his decree against the people of Babylon" Jeremiah 51:10-12.
