The prophet Malachi most likely wrote his book after the rebuilding of the Jerusalem temple with Nehemiah. The prophet warned about the corruption of moral and ethical norms during that time and warned about the arrival of the Judgment Day of the Lord, a day in which God would separate the chaff from the wheat, and the hard-hearted men from men with a heart of flesh.
Fear God with the heart, avoid sin in all its forms, and live attentive to the signs of the times, this was the message that the prophet Malachi left in his book. A message that is not very different from the message of our Lord Jesus when he taught us many of his parables about the kingdom of Heaven.
Sin is painful and destructive, but the prophets encourage us to live with hope and to discern the present moment, as in the time of Malachi, sinners tell themselves:
"It is futile to serve God. What do we gain by carrying out his requirements and going about like mourners before the LORD Almighty? But now we call the arrogant blessed. Certainly evildoers prosper, and even when they put God to the test, they get away with it" Malachi 3:14-15.
God's judgment may take time but finally it has to arrive, that is why the virtue of patience is so important for salvation, those who live in the gift of fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion, equanimity) must trust in the Lord, in this way the prophet taught us:
"´Surely the day is coming; it will burn like a furnace. All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, and the day that is coming will set them on fire,´ says the LORD Almighty. ´Not a root or a branch will be left to them. But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays. And you will go out and frolic like well-fed calves. Then you will trample on the wicked; they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day when I act,´ says the LORD Almighty." Malachi 4:1-3.
