Solving Abusive Behaviour: What if we Give Up Anonymity?

in proposal •  6 years ago

Don't You think this will solve many of the abusive behaviours in our community?

For any community to work, the social aspect is maybe the most important aspect. Part of the social aspect, is social control. It is this social control that prevents people who want to be part of the community, from behaving in a way the community is not favouring.

Sure, there will always be members of a community who do not care about what others think and say. Sure, these people may still decide to stay within the community. But, in the longer run, a community member who misbehaves in the eyes of the community at large, will not find a happy life and most likely will move on to something else, another community maybe. But that aside...

Being anonymous, nobody is able to link a users account to some real digital or even real life identity. Therefore we are free to do whatever we want. Nothing can backfire on us in real life.

What if we all would give up our anonymity?

When we are 'forced' to announce who we are, through eg links to our profiles in other social media, more linked to our real lives, like Facebook, Twitter, Linked and the likes, we establish a form of social control.

When we misbehave in certain ways, we may not be able to get the job we want; People around us in real life, may start asking questions; We may be thrown out of our real life communities; Our family and friends may start to dislike us. Most of us will not want to experience any of this. When things get real, when someone can look us in the eye, we will think twice to run something or someone over.

A side effect of giving up anonymity, is another hugely important aspect in life

RESPECT

How cool would it be when most of us will have respect for others, for the community, for what we try to create here.

I'm not against people hiding their real identity on here. In some cases they will do it for privacy or to protect themselves if they are exposing wrongdoing. Of course some will abuse this, but we have mechanisms to deal with them, if folk are prepared to use them.

I understand what you are saying, and yes some of us are anonymous for good reasons and don't show abusive behaviours, and yes we have some tools available. But tools not used does not lead to a solution while abusive behaviours is increasing by the day.

Respect isn't something someone has to "earn" or "deserve", it is a basic, fundamental requirement.

Agree. However, in a pool of abuse those who may have had respect are slowly drawn towards abisive behaviours. One gets infected by its surroundings.

All the more reason to be better. In fact, if you end up being the one shining light that doesn't give into abusive behaviors on a platform like this, you will stand out, which makes people feel drawn in to you.

You are right in a way; The dynamics at Steemit is not supporting the good while reducing the bad; I think we are in a downwards spiral. Therefore we need to breakout in one or the other way.

I've been looking at this for election fraud as well. If we all signed our ballots no duplicates !Unauthorized ballots would be found and disqualified.I think you're on the right track...Good luck!!

Good point!
