Hi,
I write this post because I recently installed ProtonVPN and create an account in this service.
For those who don't know what is a VPN (virtual private network), it's a system that links distant computers, that allows you to use an IP address from another server. The VPN is useful for internet users who want to evade censorship and mass surveillance in countries lead by authoritarian regimes.
Why use ProtonVPN?
You need to know that ProtonVPN is just one of several VPN services that exist around the world. However, there are several differences between ProtonVPN and some other VPN services, such as Avast SecureLine VPN, a VPN service developed by Avast.
Avast is an antivirus logiciel used to repair computers vulnerable to computer attacks, especially those that operate under Windows Operating System. Avast provides several affiliated services, such as its own web browser, and its VPN service.
However, the Avast-owned VPN service, Avast SecureLine VPN, unlike ProtonVPN, doesn't mask IP addresses, doesn't support anonymous payment methods, doesn't accept bitcoin (or any other cryptocurrency) and is not available for Linux users. In other words, I recommend you to prefer ProtonVPN over Avast SecureLine VPN. You may read this page to check comparisons between ProtonVPN and Avast SecureLine VPN.
How use ProtonVPN?
Before downloading ProtonVPN, you will need to create a ProtonVPN account. First, you will have to choose between several plans. There is a Free plan, but it is available only in Japan, the Netherlands and the United States, and you won't like slowness associated with the Free plan. You may then choose between Basic and Plus plans (all paid plans). I recommend you to choose the Plus plan because this plan provides more security in comparison with the Basic plan. You will have the choice between paid monthly or yearly. You may also choose between USD, Eur or CHF currency. Then, you may choose between using your own email address or create a ProtonVPN by using your ProtonMail account.
Once you have created your VPN account, you will have to download ProtonVPN on your computer (or your smartphone since ProtonVPN is available for Android). Once you have downloaded ProtonVPN on your device, you will have to access to ProtonVPN and you will have all explanations to configure your encrypted internet connection.
