The Bible teaches us that the unfathomable designs of God are above the plans of men, God rules the universe with perfect providence: "In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps" Proverbs 16:9.
In the Bible there are many stories of powerful kings whose plans were changed or destroyed by God. One of these stories is the story of King Sennacherib of the Assyrian empire. The Assyrians a few years before had destroyed the Kingdom of Israel, and deported all its inhabitants, and so Sennacherib marched against Jerusalem, the capital of the Kingdom of Judah, establishing a siege.
This done, he commanded his servants to speak, the chief cupbearer and the chief general in front of the inhabitants of the city who were on the walls:
"Then the commander stood and called out in Hebrew, ´Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria! This is what the king says: Do not let Hezekiah deceive you. He cannot deliver you from my hand. Do not let Hezekiah persuade you to trust in the LORD when he says, ´The LORD will surely deliver us; this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria´´" 2 Kings 18:28-30.
King Hezekiah then prayed to God for help and the prophet Isaiah gave him a favorable oracle, God would make return the King of Assyria to his country and there he would die: "This is what the LORD says: Do not be afraid of what you have heard—those words with which the underlings of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. Listen! When he hears a certain report, I will make him want to return to his own country, and there I will have him cut down with the sword" 2 Kings 19:6-7.
This story of the King of Assyria reminds us an important teaching of Jesus about the foolish rich man (Luke 12:13-21), that despite everything he possessed, God asks for his life. That is why true intelligence lies in putting our plans in the hands of the Lord, because if we act in pursuit of riches and worldly power, we fall into a risk that Jesus explains to us: "What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?" Matthew 16:26.
