Like a new Moses, our Lord Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount introduced us to a new law for humanity, a spiritual law no longer based on a set of prohibitions or obligations, but on an invitation to a new freedom: "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect" Matthew 5:48.
The Sermon on the Mount in the gospel of Matthew is a long speech that summarizes the foundations of the doctrine of the Kingdom of God, the dominion or empire of God's perfections, and in this spiritual reflection there are various teachings, and one particularly important is the teaching referred to the trust in the divine providence.
We live in a world given over to corruption and sin, but our Lord taught us to put all our trust in God's action in the world, the word of God cannot bear fruit in us if we live eager to accumulate money, honor, and power. The apparent goods do not lead man to salvation, but rather to a risky road full of destructive unforeseen events, the famous stumbling rocks.
With these words, Jesus taught us in the Gospel of Saint Matthew about what our attitude towards life and God should be if we want to bear fruit of eternal life:
"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?
And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?" Matthew 6:25-30.
