I finally ate a 'Beyond Burger' and almost threw up like the guy in 'An Act Of Killing'

I like the beyond meat burgers, but I think of animal products like burgers as an attempt to emulate veggies like a mushroom or beet slice. There’s no hamburger in nature. We have to process the meat or veggies into a patty and cook it. I don’t think of a burger as an animal product anymore. Just like how I think cashew cheese is no less authentic than cow’s cheese. The end result is cheese which is delicious, but especially so when it’s plant based. It’s all how you look at it. Glad to be vegan now though regardless.

I'm in two minds about this. You're correct that there is no hamburger in nature, but the marketing and fact that the Beyond Burger feels the need to 'bleed' is a clear emulation of the meat version.

I had a Beyond Burger two months ago. Although it was cold, because the restaurant had messed up another of my party's orders and I therefore waited twenty minutes to eat it, it was deeply enjoyable. I think the 'blood' had 'coagulated' in that time period so it didn't seem to 'bleed'.

But my ultimate tuppence is that I do miss the density of meat in my burgers. Meat has real bite and, since it is horror in every other way, the Beyond Burger succeeds in restoring this texture without the inherent bad things.

I would rather it didn't 'bleed' though.

Here's another conundrum: Memphis Meats are close to commercialising the creation of meat from animal cells. The CEO, Uma Valeti, was interviewed on Sam Harris' podcast a couple of years ago. He did an amazing job of countering objections from many angles. I need to listen again, but this feels like a huge ethical landmark.

Thanks for relating your personal experiences, @lenskonig

After further consideration, I will give this burger another go and try not to have a murder-flashback.

Memphis Meats look thrilling. I hope it takes off. This photo alone makes me feel they have a vision worth chewing for.

Have a peaceful frolic.

Hi @antandra
Yes, perhaps I was a little harsh on the Beyond Burger, I was reporting my first experience with it and the emotional flashback it caused. Maybe I will try one again in the future once I've settled from this experience.

I like cashew cheese too :)
