Growth in quiet areas, or rat races in big cities?

Hello Steemian’s,

You could say this blog post is part of my “matrix” style contemplation. It’s an honest piece of what was, what is, and what will continue to be until the end of at least this epoch of time.

I have lost many important skills. Perhaps this is not my fault, and to degree not even my parents fault. Sometimes I view myself as “enslaved” but there are limits to this belief. Writing this blog post for instance is a level of freedom we all take for granted. Even having this frame of thought is perhaps a level of freedom a slave born into captivity would never have.

My grandparents knew real slavery for about 4 years in concentration camps. When they were liberated, they had nothing to go back too. Life was a struggle to rebuild. They worked harder than I could ever imagine, and they persisted. Perhaps PTSD hindered their develoment emotionally, or perhaps they went back to something basic (survival). I can’t say the world today has changed much. Sure we have new technology and medical discovery; but immorality as we used to define it is being changed and in many circles it is now considered cliche.

We seem to embrace the barbarity of the Romans; and readily admit something they had done was correct and right. I personally believe people seem more confused about who they are, and where they are going. The past has been forgotten and we are “progressing” towards something better.

Perhaps I am just a pessimist or cynic. Sometimes I feel we had it right when we knew how to work the field. Sometimes I feel our isolation required personal contemplation. We focused less on what other people were doing and more upon what we personally could accomplish. We also needed to look up to the sky and pray for some well needed rain.

I guess I have always been an idealist when it comes to the past, and a realist when it comes to the present. What has been done before is being done again. So did we do anything right to begin with?

In any case, the big city at least to me has created levels of artificiality stacked upon itself. We have services that require services. Products that come from the ground and are packaged and readily available so long as the power stays on. We spend much of our time in lineups. We rush rush rush and don’t seem to be happy. Human beings are obstacles to run around and we seem so busy we forget what’s important.

In any case, identifying problems and complaining is always easy. I would have to sort out my idealism from the realism of what is actually happening. I could live off the land, I could return to basics. But would the grass be any greener on the other side? I would lose my family, and force others to face their inner side. Perhaps we enjoy the outside forces constantly ringing at us. After all, it’s sometimes more painful to face our own inner demons. It’s much easier to create outside ones to deal with.
