Yesterday, I inadvertently ended up being one of the first people to come across someone trying to run a new scam, here on Steemit. I wrote a bit about it here.
Summer flowers
Later, I was reading a post by @droucil which exposed an evident loophole in the code of a voting bot, which had enabled several people to make a lot of "money for nothing" through exploiting someone else's oversight.
Then, this morning, I came across a completely different situation, in which someone was clearly exploiting the Steemit rewards system for gain. Speaking of "Reward Pool Rape," look at the comment section of this post-- it's completely insane!
In unrelated news, I started writing this post from my place of work-- the small art gallery and gift shop my wife and I have together, here in our hometown.
I was getting my lunch out from the back room fridge-- as I walked back into the gallery, a customer who'd walked into the store during the 15 seconds I'd been gone observed: "Wow, didn't realize you were here. Aren't you worried that people will just walk in and STEAL stuff?"
The Wave of Dishonesty?
Evening light
I didn't really respond, but the whole sequence of events here on Steemit, followed by the customer's remarks made me ponder the greater issue of honesty and integrity... and dishonesty and exploitation. Earlier, I threw out a quickie post to get a feel for people's take on "integrity;" this is a much lengthier follow-up.
I thought about the customer's remark (which I left unanswered) again, and contemplated my feelings about it... and here's where I ended up:
"I am not concerned whether or not you're a thief and want to steal from me, or whether "people" want to steal from me, I am concerned about the fact that you walked into a random establishment and the FIRST THOUGHT that came into your head and you expressed was THEFT."
In other words, here we have an essentially "neutral" situation, and the first person walking in on it interprets it through the lens of perception of DIS-honesty.
Meanwhile, on Steemit
On Steemit we have been given this great social content platform and interactive community, which is designed in such a way that people can earn rewards-- and often quite good rewards-- through honest effort and diligence.
Calendula with water droplets
And yet we sit here with a huge number of incidences of people not seeing that at all, but instead looking for ways to defraud and exploit the system.
Which makes me wonder if the majority of people in our world-- if otherwise left to their own devices-- are inherently dishonest?
Which, in turn, makes me consider whether or not I'm a strange outlier, in that whenever I approach a situation-- online, or in the flesh-- the thought of cheating, or deception, or theft are not even part of my thought pattern. I mean, I don't walk into a grocery or a department store with the thought "What can I steal here, today?" I don't sit in front of a web site that sells something I want, trying to find a way to deceive it into giving me something for free.
But this isn't about me, it's about exploring the human psyche.
Hello! How May I Cheat You Today?
So what is going on in this minds of people whose approach to life seems to be to cheat, exploit, deceive, defraud, steal and so on? A general collapse of morals and ethics? Or a life that seems "so hard" to get by in that people take desperate measures? A sense of entitlement to getting "something for nothing?" A natural predisposition for risk-taking? Selfishness? Leave a comment-- share your opinions and input-- be part of the conversation! I want to hear from you-- and others want to hear from you, as well! Share your thoughts and experiences below!

It's about empathy. If we treat others the way we want to be treated, then there will be no theft. Some people can't make that shift - actually to step into the shoes of another. They see only their own situation and opportunity for gain. My friend dropped $2 out of their pocket at my house. I put it on the bench. It's there until they return. I can't pick the money up and put it in my pocket or purse - it's not mine to take. It's only $2, but it's the principle that counts.

@katyclark, I think you touch on something important here... the inability of so many to realize that what they do impacts and affects other people. And I hate to say it... but our increasing tendency to see everything through the screen of a smartphone is causing us to separate further from others, to the point where we are less and less capable of seeing them as "persons."
Clearly, you have integrity and a sense of right and wrong... even if it is a bit inconvenient for you. Many people do not... they just want "fast and easy."

Thanks, @denmarkguy. Sorry for delay in responding, I've been travelling - without using media devices, which was kind of cleansing, but then it's hard to return and take up the reins of the former existence :) Integrity: Who are we when no-one is watching....I enjoy reading your posts...Hope 2018 is a great year for you...

those bucks from the reward pool could finance a hard working minnow to produce great content. shoutout to @aggroed, thank you for giving a lecture to the account.

Just seems like a lot of people have been "behaving badly" on Steemit, as of late... as others have remarked here and there, the price of Steem is higher so the crooks are coming out of the woodwork to "have a go." And yes, @aggroed is one of the stand-up people of the community.

I've said this Many, many times in the past.
it's still true.
there are only TWO kinds of people in the WORLD
US...or THEM.
THEM are subhuman
NO rules of honesty or integrity apply to them
they are prey.
it all depends on how 'extendable' your monkeysphere is.
it might have something to do with empathy
or narcissm.
or something.

throw in the 4% of sociopaths and narcissists into the equation, and we have it!
Until 'we' see these people this as a 'thing', we will forever be allowing the wankers to make things bad for the rest of us.
I also put it into 2 categories - wankers an' nice people.

I suppose yes and no... depends on whether your monkeysphere is limited to just your personal web of trust or it includes "people you know and deal with" on a regular basis.
Even people close to us sometimes engage in dodgy behavior.
If somebody steals... is it mitigated by the fact that it was "Fred" from across the street rather than a "them?"
Isn't stealing just stealing?

nope...stealing is not JUST stealing.
how come the FED owns a third of your state?
is that stealing?
'if the fed can..what can others not?

you obviously think of 'fred' as US
does fred think of you the same way?

And that's where the whole monkeysphere approach starts to get a little dodgy for me... who's "in" and who's not? And who defines what "in" and "out" looks like?
I do wrap up the broken glass even though I have NO idea who might handle it (or not) after it goes in the trash. I don't pour old solvent into the creek because someone might be fishing downstream and get poisoned... but both the garbage man and possible fisherman (or kids swimming) are "its" to me.
The ideology looks good to me, but the functional application in our world seems a bit tricky.

You misunderstand.
It's not an ideology...it's the fundamental hardwiring in our brains.
EVERYONE is like that...it's the basic foundation
SOME OF us...you for example...HAVE an ideology built UPON that foundation.
You've modified it to suite your own principles.
Not everyone has done that.

Hi nice to "see" you again @denmarkguy. Been a while, used to enjoy our talks. I just posted something similar to this lamenting all the disingenuous folks on this platform. It's a shame.

Hi Chelsea, thanks for visiting!
It's still hard for me to understand why people bother to game the system, when "the system" actually offers a legitimate way to get rewarded. And so, I end up questioning the motivations of greater humanity... especially as I look around and see how people treat each other and take things for granted, outside Steemit.

There are a couple of things going on right now. My personal opinion are some people with large stake in Steem holdings themselves trying to point out that changes need to be done and they are doing it the only way they think they can. I’ve noticed a few “really old” accounts that where never used sudden spring into action trying to point out certain behavers and push things a certain direction.
Someone is trying to pressure public option into going a certain route. What route they are going to go with it, and if it will empower or beat down the little guy I have no idea.
Because how dishonest people can become when trying to empower themselves more by trying look like the hero like we have seen countless times in our own live, government, and history books. Makes me wonder if we are having the wool pulled over our eyes or if these people at end of the day just have the best intentions in trying to solve a problem they are unable to anymore.
It is centrally disheartening when you pour a lot of time into an activity just to see people treat it like a joke and profit massively off it while they do. This is why you always need to be diversified in life.
It’s scary to think one dishonest person can destroy a lifetimes worth of work. I’ve seen great companies have to declare bankruptcy and go out of business just because someone decided they “deserved” a higher reward by embezzling millions out of a company which lead them down to a path of being shut down for good.
