People Are Happier When They Give Voluntarily

in psychology •  7 years ago  (edited)

When people are forced to do something, it kind of takes the enjoyment out of the experience; especially when it comes to helping other people.

When obligatory circumstances arise that place pressure on us to give to others, like when holidays come around, some have an easier time than others coping with the social pressure of needing to spend or risk looking like they don't care about their loved ones.

When an occasion of giving is forced upon someone, it's no surprise that people wouldn't get as much enjoyment out of the experience than if they had given to someone voluntarily.

And a new recent study that was reported in Frontiers in Psychology confirms this simple notion.

A recent study investigated the nature of gift-giving with preschool kids in China and it was found that when the kids give according to their own free will they are much happier; as opposed to when they are obliged to give to another person.

When we give to others voluntarily, it is more emotionally rewarding.

There are many motivations as to why someone might give to someone else, and researchers suggest that one of the main reasons that we do engage in voluntary giving is because it makes us happy. And in-return when we are happier we want to share even more.

When it comes to giving when we are obligated to do so, are we still reaping emotional rewards? Well, researchers sought to investigate this with the preschool children in China. They put children into two different groups, one that was designed to have them share stickers voluntarily and one that felt obligated to do so.

Interestingly, the study found that when obligated to do the sharing, the children would share more; but it didn't make them happy to be doing it. When they gave away stickers on their own accord, they were much happier. The results of this study are said to be the first evidence that voluntary sharing is superior to pressured giving, as far as the emotional reward or benefit gained.

Down The Road...

Perhaps one day researchers will investigate the receiving end of the giving as well. Are people happier when they receive unexpected gifts that were given by the giver of their own free will? Or, are they just the same/or happier when they are given gifts because of the social pressure or expectation of doing so?

Researchers suggest that the findings from this present study in China need to be replicated in the future with more controls. They also suggest that further research should be done in the way of investigating the positive feedback loop and how an act of generosity might lead to reaping emotional rewards and happiness for the giver. And how this feedback loop prompts even more acts of giving, fueling an overall habit of giving and generosity.

When we give to others voluntarily, it is more emotionally rewarding.

It is part of the gift of Nature, our Creator is a giver. Giving makes God himself happy and feeling love (John 3:16). When we give we feel love.

Share and give without expecting any return or favor and you'll be more happy than ever before in your life.

the happiness/enjoyment received from giving is itself a reward :)

Excellent post @doitvoluntarily! I definitely believe that we are a LOT happier when we receive unexpected gifts as opposed to when we receive gifts due to obligation.

For example, imagine it's Christmas morning and you have already told your parents that you want a new Playstation 5 (yup, waaay in the future). So when Christmas morning arrives and you unwrap your presents to find that shiny new game console, you're of course happy but at the same time, you were expecting it in the first place so you don't appreciate it as much.

Now imagine that your parents already told you a few weeks ago that money is pretty tight these days, so they won't be able to buy you any presents this year; what a bummer! You're disappointed but you understand their limitations, so you console yourself by walking past Best Buy every evening. Then on Christmas morning, your parents do a complete 360 and end up buying you that wicked new game console you always wanted (they heard you whispering PS5 in your sleep)! You are beyond overjoyed as you unwrap your present, hug your parents as hard as you can and then race outside with your PS5 held up high above your head, like a badge of honor! Wow, what a rush - and it was all thanks to receiving an unwanted gift.

By the way, the two aforementioned scenarios were based on my own personal experience ;)

I love it when things are backed up by science. Couldn't agree more!

Great!

Very high quality philosophy reflects in the post. Honesty voluntary works give us more satisfaction. Upvoted followed thanks.

I love to give anonymously, that gives me a big emotional smile.

Very true. Cheerful giving happens when one is not forced to give.
A very interesting and informative post.

JUST DO IT!!!! (voluntarily of course.)

Help others and they will love you.. Hate others and no one will help you..

The heart smiles each time the act of giving is implemented! Happy is he whom smiles from within.... Kids are definitely the future. Great post!

Giving is so powerful and brings so much happiness.

given take is this Universe beautiful law as when you give something to others voluntarily and in regards he/she must give you some rewards it may be cute smile too.

It's not really giving if you are being compelled, even indirectly!

we should be thankful that we could give

Very interesting and informative post @doitvoluntarily. You are absolutely right.

There is no other way to give than voluntarily. Giving something over under duress is not true giving.

Nice post! I find it most rewarding when you give to a total stranger.

This could be an interesting way of improving people's hapiness.

Blessed are the people who give than to receive. Give it shall be given unto you double portion. BE BLESSED.

Great read! Giving voluntarily and unexpected gifts are definitely the ones that make me happy.

I feel it's a matter of freedom...when you are obligated, you feel you are restrained in your freedom to do or not to do, and your freedom to choose the moment that feel s the better for you...and the freedom of the soul can not be unchained, so when you are obliged to do something, you feel a disalignment with your soul that wants to do what feels the better for you, not what is socially correct or admissible...when you let your soul live its freedom, you are naturally encline to give, because it is joyful to give, and it is joyful to do it when the momentum is here... ^_^
Thank you very much for this great post @doitvoluntarily !merci.png

They say altruism is dead. And it is in a sense that doing something for others while giving no direct benefit to yourself gives in fact the greatest reward; Feeling good just like you say!!

Setting aside our own needs in exchange for others gives us a very great reward for our soul, but if we are doing it too much, we might forget our own needs. Great post!

good point!

Great article, I believe GOD teaches us in 2nd Corinthians 9:8 to give freely and not in compulsion, because he knows what kind of affect it can have on the human body, and what type of benefits we can benefit spirtitallt as well

I'm upvoting right now! I've upvoted. Nice post from @doitvoluntarily Thanks for sharing!

You mean when we find value in giving to others, we feel more personal reward? And that when we are pushed or guilted into doing it, we feel less rewarded?

Imagine that. Here we are, 35 years after the death of the champion of rational self-interest (Ayn Rand), and she's still criticized largely for her belief that we should only give to others when we find some benefit in it for ourselves.

Thanks for sharing this study, it was definitely intriguing and I'm glad people are starting to investigate topics like this. I would assume there are other such studies, but this is my first exposure to one. Consider yourself followed.
