have you ever heard of "Emotional Intelligence"?

in psychology •  8 years ago

The concept of intelligence is a thought based on the amount of information one can process in a given time. although it may sound similar, emotional intelligence is actually a whole different angle of the spectrum. emotional intelligence is more that just someone’s IQ, it's the circuitry running between the brain’s Executive centers in the prefrontal lobe to the brain’s "Limbic System". a good example of emotionally intelligible person would be someone who can understand how people feel and express themselves. an emotionally intelligible person is adept at managing personal and social chance of themselves.

a man by the name of Daniel Goleman researched the term and tried to understand and explain the concept of emotional intelligence. Goleman stated that people basically have two minds, one for rational thought, and the other for emotion and morals. Goleman doesn’t have a full understanding on emotional intelligence, but many psychologists continue research on the topic. although they sound quite separate, logic and emotion are inseparable parts of the human thought process.

the concept of emotional intelligence stemmed greatly from the field of general psychology. psychology focuses primarily on how people act and respond, so emotionally intelligence is a key building block to psychology. a psychologist knows how the average person thinks because they have studied how people act, so it is a key peice to understand emotional intelligence.

Goleman believes that understanding emotional intelligence would be very advantageous and have many positive effects. one of these effects is empathy. it may sound odd, but many people don’t understand or can’t comprehend the concept of empathy. empathy is a skill in which someone understands other people’s emotion sensitivity and standpoint, and uses this knowledge to make decisions. an example of empathy would see best fit in an situation when you are angry. rather than venting your rage to a person in front of you, you consider their feelings, and stay quiet. you recognize their feelings and modified your actions to be most vigilant. other useful traits Goleman believes you could acquire are; confidence, self awareness, and optimism.

so although it may sound strange, understanding emotional intelligence is a useful skill that can be applied to many different scenarios. it also leads to useful social skills like confidence, empathy, and optimism. and on top of that emotional intelligence is one of the most important building blocks to psychology. all in all, emotional intelligence is more useful than it sounds.
