Mini Motivation #24 - Will you stand up for your opinions?

in psychology •  7 years ago

Generally, most of us would like to avoid confrontation, because living in peace and harmony is what we all strive to achieve. Which is good, because it trains us to think with tact and diplomacy.

However, there are times when we see something we have a hard opinion with, but voicing said opinion would mean potentially hurting someone, and I held back. You knew your opinion was valid. You knew your point of view will help shed light on the issue at hand. You knew you had the right to speak up. But you also knew by doing so, it may hurt the feelings of a few. Hard truth for some, is a pill they don't like to swallow.

So you decided to just keep to your opinion, and turn your back against your principles. You talked to your loved ones and close friends about it, and they, too, encouraged you to speak up. And yet, the courage you lacked, mainly for the fear of hurting feelings.

Today, find that courage.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and there is nothing wrong in speaking up, even if your opinion carries some truth that may be hurtful to others. Most words backed by principles do. But who knows, it could be the perspective others need to see the errors in their thoughts?

One thing my Master taught me early in my career is that,

If you don't make enough enemies along the way, then you could be doing it wrong. Bring not your hate onto others, but stand for what is right. It is the choice of others to hate your beliefs, just like how it is your choice to stand up for those principles.

Mini Motivation is my own daily strategy to inspire myself. Mostly 3 minute reads.

From Motivation, we gain Inspiration. From Inspiration, we achieve Momentum. And the rest, they say, is history.

Hope it helps nudge you a bit too in the right direction.

Oh it did? Let me know in the comments, and of course an upvote would be a nice motivation for me. :)

For me, I will 2 modes, 1 for personal and another one for work.

For Personal
When I'm in a group of 7 or 8 colleagues/friends asking where to eat, I usually just follow majority without much suggestion as I can eat most of the food.
While when I'm with my smaller group of friends/ family/ loved one I usually transparent I will voice out my concern, ideas, and feeling.

For Work
If in a meeting with more than 10 people I usually follow majority again. If I have question or concern on that topic or project I will personally talk to the person.
if in a meeting less than 5/6 person usually I will voice out.

So in the end - a big group I'm easier going while in a small group I will voice out.

Ah, interesting approach. I guess your objective is to help move the decision process along faster, eh?

That's right, one have to stand up for one's ideas, but in the most assertive way possible. Many people cave to the pressure to conform to forced automatic consensus in order not to conflict with anyone and be part of the team, which in turn doesn't want to conflict with the desire of the boss.

Well, have to be tactful too. It's not just what is being said, and how it's being said as well. Communication skill is such commodity. I think always had been, and always will be. :)

So very true. I had to learn that lesson the hard way. You have to speak up. If you don't change won't occur. Most of all you have to speak up for what you believe in, for your own sake. If others are allowed to have their opinions you are too. So much lately if you speak up against anyone you get blasted. Don't let them do that to you.

Thanks for the words of encouragement! Speak up or stay silent forever. :)

The picture of this post has a strong message that captivated me. Wow the key to failure is truly trying to please everyone because no matter how much you try, you can never please everyone. Having enemies shows you are doing something right. Not everyone will agree with your method but who cares? So long what you are doing is yielding results

I think everyone is entitled to our own methods and opinions, as long as we still take feedback and listen to opinions of others.

Actually this depends on the mentality and situation. I also have the same opinion that I don’t need to please everybody. But as I see from my work, for example, I just lose due to my opinion. People who try to please everyone are getting promoted much faster

Yeah, it gets tough when it's work, and someone above is asserting their authority over those under them

Thanks for the constant motivation!

I love it , thanks for the motivation

Recently, I been doing a lot of posting about milk, dairy, cow slaughtering. Many of my facebook friends begin very long battle of words with me. I single handly counter all the arguments for anyone and everyone. My job is a real estate sales, so in theory I should be nice to everyone in hope of getting their business. But I want to stand up for those who can not speak. I would lose the business but at least I spoke for the right of animals who were forced into this world, forced to live a short life, forced to get milked and forced to die. Cognitive dissonance is everywhere. I will stand for my principle despite for my material loss.

so true. You cannot please everyone.

It's true we cannot control others to hate out belief, but doing the right thing is more important to build a better living society. Haters will always remain haters if they do not have any intention to change the world.

people pleasing never helps anyone although many of us are trained to do so... great post

I’m out of voting power so I just gave your post a promotion.🙌🏼😊🎁

Truth be told sir, the key to failure is trying to please everyone. That way you never know what's the right thing to do, you're always concerned with what others think about you and this doesn't help at all.

Just like in an arcade/action game concepts, if you don't meet obstacles on your way, you know you aren't on the right track and at such you have to pause and go back to the right track.

In life, we'll always meet oppositions, it's how we react in such situations that makes or breaks us. We should be prepared to say the truth, and not neglect saying it, albeit, when saying our facts we should also know how we put them forward so that it can be acceptable.
