It was never about winning anyway. It really is each to their own. But it is challenging when we start playing 'I am better than thou' game. The ego will want to prove they're wrong. I'm still sometimes get sucked into this game, ended up eating my own words. I guess maybe the key is, knowing yourself. That way maybe it's easier to give others space to just be.

Always a thought provoking read @rok-sivante. Though i rarely comment, i do follow and enjoy your incredible writing... Today i feel like leaving a little comment... in an attempt to share my perpendicular (but not opposing) view.
Believes are strongly held ideas about how the world is or aught to be... if ideas are entities that occupy our brain, then we, as hosts, can't help but be zombified to transmit these ideas onto others.
And if Believes are tied to people's identities, then for better or worse, people have the need to validate their identities to others through a set of proves (that they often falsely deem sufficient)....
As for Truth ... i think it needs to be difined in almost every discorse, because to some it is an absolute and singular; while to others it is an individual perception - everyone is right, even though their "truths" contradict. So what is truth?
Also i do think that there is an evolutionary need to transmit ideas - to make claims, to present proves, etc. After all, evolution itself is a transition of information (slightly distorted with every transition), but if the idea can adapt to its environment, it can even change it... and it still might not be the Truth :)
Truth, i think, can only be demonstrated through scientific method, where prediction models can yield verifiable consistent results. And it is absolutely vital to pass on this Truth - screw ego. Everything else, however, like personal anecdotes, may indeed be a need to stroke one's ego.
Fade t o w h i t e ....

Also, i'm really grateful, i'm feeling inspired from your post. i'm actually thinking of making my own post on this subject. there is so much more to to it.

Great stuff man!
Forcing your opinion of the truth onto someone else is always ego driven. It is arrogance to the fact of infinite potential itself, which might even be a part of the subject you are trying to prove.
In our infinitwly small awareness it is impossible to understand and be conscious of the complete and real Truth. And if you don't know the Truth in it's completeness, how could you even begin to try to teach it unto other people.

I see nothing wrong with people engaging in a good discussion and a good discussion usually includes both parties trying to prove a point they think is correct. That's how truth disseminates and spreads and I'm actually thankful to many people who have taken the time to try and prove me wrong because I think it is always enriching. Of course, I'm especially thankful to the people who have managed to convince me in something that I wasn't convinced of before because I consider this personal growth from my own point of view. The idea that being proven wrong should somehow be considered a ding on your dignity should be weeded out. Neither my, nor your ideas are holly, we should always be willing to question them and should not take it personally when it turns out one of those ideas turns out to be wrong. Embrace the growth, be grateful and move on.

As far as i understand ,We live in a free democratic world where there is freedom of speech. Everybody is entitled to his or her own opinion. It is absolutely wrong to force ones ideas on another person. The sad part is everyone wants to be right but never wrong . We are always trying to be the best outta the rest. We tend to want to talk more than we are supposed to listen. Ego burns with passion within most of us. Guess it's just how humans were made. But the point everyone is entitled to their own opinion still stands. When we get to understand this, the idea of wanting to prove a point will fade.Applauded your article. Nice one.

I think...if you're trying to prove a point...to be victorious and win...it's nothing but ego. No need to prove a point. No need to win. Because life isn't meant to be won. It isn't a win/lose scenario. Simply extend a hand and give assistance. Share your experience. It's all we need to do. Everyone is on their own path to discovery and they will get to the destination in their own time. At least that's what I think.

Yes to this.
And it’s so hard to not fall into common combative patterns, given how polemic is entrenched in human reasoning.
“Prove me wrong then!”
“Where is the evidence for this?”
There’s an old Taoist saying along the lines of knowing the truth is enough! Having to prove it suggests you don’t quite believe it yourself. Sorry couldn’t find it, the original is so much more eloquent than the way I tried to paraphrase it.

I'm just thinking about it. How many times have I tried to prove a point and what was the result? Disappointment. I find that while you're trying to prove a point, the other person is also trying to prove a point. In the end, the point is lost and everyone is unhappy.
Thanks for sharing.

There's honestly no point in trying to prove your point to anyone. Everyone has their own experience and their own truth, and trying to force your truth onto them will just make them defensive, plus they won't hear it or understand it. Now BE-ing your truth, that's where it's at.
It's different if someone is open to hearing your experience and thoughts. That's what I love about steemit and other blog style platforms, you can put yourself out there and see who's interested.

I spent three years on a mountain in Tibet with a Zen master who taught me to treat all my fellow humans as equal, never push my beliefs or opinions on others, but to listen to theirs.
I was like, "Hell yeah, there's no point in arguing with stupid people. I get it."
Then he told me to get the fuck out. I guess my training was done.

I think this is something I have been learning over time just from experience.
Sometimes I tried so hard to prove a point and it would just falls on deaf ears or actually cause the other person to put their defenses up and be less receptive. It is a lot like banging your head against a brick wall, it doesn't really achieve anything and you end up with a headache.
Better to just live well and lead by example. Those that want to learn will notice.

Is the "glory" of our own victory so important that it's worth the cost of another's own discovery on their own timeline...?
This is something that I have gradually learned as a parent. My kids are 11, 8, 5 & 2. It wasn't until my 2nd child became a toddler that I realized how much I had controlled my first child's discoveries! I have since tried my very best to back off and allow them to learn their lessons at their own pace as long they're not in any danger. Now I watch my children all trying to teach the baby and while I appreciate their enthusiasm, I often tell them, "Let him be. Let him explore on his own. He doesn't have to see things or experience things like anyone else." I guess, this ties into part two for me (I read them out of order) because I'm really hoping they will figure this out earlier in life than I did.

Reading your post. The phrase "Knowledge is power comes to mind. We each have a desire to influence the people around us by impressing upon them our ideas, thoughts, values thereby raising ourselves up in the eyes of our audience.

This part really caught me.
One of my friends once said, and I quip: "If we need to prove a point, then that point wasn't necessary in the first place". You have just reiterated these words.
Nice piece buddy

Really great psychological post, @rok-sivante, thanks for sharing it! Maybe you'll like my fiction story as well. It is called Blood of the Wanderer. It is a fantasy-philosophical story about a talented storyteller, who faces some hard choices in his life. I don't want to spoil the plot, but you should try it. :)
