Habits! How are they formed? Well, there are 3 parts of the mind when it comes to habits.
Subconscious Mind
Critical Factor
Conscious Mind
The conscious mind is the effort to turn on a light switch. This is the part of the mind that requires effort. If you are first learning an instrument such as a violin. It is a conscious effort that seems to be a herculean task at times. This part of the mind requires effort and repetition.
The critical factor. This is the bouncer of your mind. It is the part of you that adds human judgement into the picture. If you bypass the critical factor you can make anything a habit. Your critical factor is like a bouncer. He waits outside the proverbial bar or club and checks out the patrons outside to see if they jive with what's on the inside. This is that part of the mind that judges and determines if it jives with the beliefs on the inside.
Subconscious. This is the part of your mind that is connected to the emotional part of who we are. The theory I have is the conscious mind is connected to the neo-cortex. The subconscious is connected to the mammalian (emotional) part of the brain. Let us do a test to determine these parts of the mind.
Let's do an exercise to prove the subconscious mind.
Recite the Alphabet and sing it. Great! Easy?
Now, let's prove the conscious mind. Recite the Alphabet every 6th letter. Hard wasn't it?
The emotional part of the brain is linked to the long term memory and subconscious MEMORY. A sales man will use sales tactics that cater to your emotion. The more excited he can get you the better. He will sell you anything at that point as long as the idea of what you are buying is justified in your mind. That is your critical factor. If the critical factor comes in a says "No" there is too much pain in that idea. You may just change your mind, or it may not match up with current beliefs.
The subconscious mind will take in all information we learn and experience in our lifetime. It begins at birth (some say before birth), soaking up information like a tape recorder, accumulating information as we grow and experience life. It also begins forming strong beliefs based on what we experience and what we learn, which determines how we react to everything in our life.
The subconscious mind does not make choices; it accepts everything, good and bad, positive and negative. The critical factor makes choices. It judges and decides. This does not occur strongly till about 8-13 years of age.
The conscious mind, however, does make choices, almost every minute of our lives. Since everything has its equal and opposite such as day has night, love has hate, prosperity has poverty and on and on, our lives are a matter of choice, our conscious choice. Conscious awareness..
What’s expected tends to be realized. The brain and the nerves react only to strong mental images, either self-created or from the external imagery. The mental picture formed becomes the structure, and the subconscious mind uses every bit of it to carry out a plan. That’s why it is crucial to always keep a positive state of mind because we become what we think about. We also need to work on our responses to the negative and understand how to have balanced thinking without rose colored glasses.
Opposing ideas cannot be held at one and the same time. This is called inner-civil-war.
Once an idea has been accepted by the subconscious mind, it remains until it is replaced by another belief. The longer it is held, the more it tends to become a fixed habit or thought pattern. This is how habits of action are formed, both good and bad. Education is a great form of hitting the subconscious. It can be slow or fast.
When dealing with the subconscious mind the greater the conscious work, the less the subconscious return on investment. This proves why “will-power” breaks down the way it does! If you have insomnia you’ve learned “the harder you "try" to go to sleep, the more wide awake you become.” A rule is when working with the subconscious mind, TAKE IT SLOW. This means you must slowly develop a positive mental expectancy that your problem can be and will be solved. Imagination is more powerful that intellect and will be.
So if you constantly worry about not having enough CASH -- you'll never have enough CASH. It's that simple. If you don't think you're capable of accomplishing your career -- you'll never accomplish any career. If you don't think there are enough opportunities for you -- you'll never find the right opportunity. Your brain becomes sensitive to the realization of opportunities. When you destroy your awareness mentally your brain will cease to bother, recognize, or look.
If you don't think you can get ahead in life -- you'll never get ahead in life. If you think you're overweight -- you'll always be overweight. If you don't think you can -- then you never will. Why? Because your subconscious mind is always working on the information you send it -- and if that information is negative then you will only have a negative responding reality. We live in a belief driven world.
What is expected tends to be realized.

The echo goes on and on...
