Bessel van der Kolk's firing, imminent threat, and institutional memory

In this video I briefly discuss the firing of Bessel van der Kolk from the Boston Trauma Center, which he helped found thirty five years ago.

I refer the interested viewer to the following articles, from which I copied the photos used in this video:

Somehow none of the media I read/watch reported this. Thanks for bringing this matter to my attention.

It didn't make much news outside of Boston. This is unfortunate considering that Dr. van der Kolk's work has had such an impact on many people's lives.

I've been working as faculty now for 10 years and have on occasion witnessed some appallingly rude borderline hostile behavior.

Unpleasant behavior is something that we can live with. What we cannot live with is sexual predators, which is was the original focus of the #MeToo movement.

It concerns me that this instance blurs the lines. Nothing positive can come from this.

In the Netherlands, but I suspect it to be true elsewhere, there seems to be hardly any university staff which can be easily approached for cases of hostile behaviour (with the acception of sexual hostile behavior) . And if there are their power seems to be very restricted. So it might also be the result of poor internal management structures.

In a follow up interview van der Kolk mentioned there being other management problems occurring at the same time and that his removal in part obscured these issues. He wouldn't elaborate, but it certainly suggests there was some mismanagement going on.

There are situations I can't understand. I'm too XX century for this

I believe that there's a majority of people that agree with you, they just don't exercise their voice. I assume they are mostly silent out of fear. I discuss this briefly in my vlog #007. I decided that my anxiety about speaking against what I perceive as injustice was an indication that I am in fact compelled to speak.
