We all know that trading has a negative effect on mental health for many traders. It's a stressful, competitive and cut-throat industry. You have to be able to handle the highs and lows of the markets in order to succeed.
Well, believe it or not, but apparently that's not all there is to it. According to a blog posted yesterday on AltcoinTrading.NET, as long as you keep some risk management going on, market speculation is actually good for your mental health.
It's a systematic exposure to stress and adrenaline, apparently, which some shrinks propose as an alternative to meds.
The source is a 2021 research paper
The blog cites a post from PsychologyToday, a well known "pop psychology" portal. That post leads to a peer-reviewed paper, but unfortunately locked behind a paywall and not on SciHub.
Here is the reference, maybe some of you will find a way to access it:
Barlow DH, Curreri AJ, Woodard LS. Neuroticism and Disorders of Emotion: A New Synthesis. Current Directions in Psychological Science. 2021;30(5):410-417. doi:10.1177/09637214211030253
I couldn't so instead if that I went to look if there's been a discussion about it on Reddit. And Reddit delivered.
Here's what Reddit thinks about it
I will not link the community that discussed the paper because that wouldn't be appreciated. I will just say that it is a subreddit that has absolutely nothing to do with crypto. It's one of the communities that grew from a group of people with a common health problem, but it's a pretty constructive one. Hence talks about what capers are shrinks about to come up with next.
I will just paste screenshots of some of the comments people had.
People like it!
To sum it up read quick, people in general liked the idea of not avoiding situations that stress you out and cause you anxiety, if that's your decision and you think you're ready for it.
It seems that there's a type of people who get sick of avoiding everything that's not "safe" and "risk free". I like to see that!
I personally thought this was super interesting. It almost looks like a social shift of some sorts where "calculated risk" is no longer a swearword. When Buttcoiners get the memo, they will be real salty haha.
But also - us crypto hodlers love to whinge about volatility, but in fact it's just money. As long as you are not a complete degenerate wilfully trying to ruin your life, it's just a game and your losses are limited.
That for me is a good motto to keep reminding to myself.
