Darwin, em seu famoso trabalho On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection publicado no ano de (1859), propôs que as espécies se diversificavam (processo evolutivo) através da seleção natural (e da seleção sexual), e a partir de ancestrais comuns.
Ao longo do século XX, a Teoria Evolutiva inicialmente formulada por Darwin se tornou ainda mais robusta e sólida com a introdução da genética e a exploração dos genes.
