Pedro Sanchez has become the seventh president of the Government of democracy after the approval of the motion of censure against Mariano Rajoy in the Congress of Deputies as a result of the condemnatory sentence of the Gürtel case. The King signed the royal decree this afternoon with the appointment of Sanchez, once the president of the Congress, Ana Pastor, formally communicated his investiture, and this Saturday he will take office as president of the Government at 11 in the morning. The motion of censure has prospered with 180 votes in favor, 169 against and one abstention, of the 350 deputies that Congress has. Mariano Rajoy finally has not resigned and was the first to publicly congratulate Sanchez a half hour before the vote. "It has been an honor, good luck to all", he has wished. The socialist leader yesterday promised to respect the Budgets of Rajoy if he won the motion and to "restore relations of dialogue between the Government and the new Government".
Born on February 29, 1972 in Madrid, he grew up in a well-to-do family, as a businessman-employer father. While he devoted many hours to basketball (measuring 1.90 m) he studied economics, first in his city and then in Brussels.
A lover of politics since he was young, according to his classmates, he was a municipal councilor in Madrid from 2004 to 2009, when he became a deputy and his career took off.
In 2014 he became the first PSOE leader to be elected by the militants.
But his weakened party came behind Rajoy in the December 2015 elections.
He tried to form a government with the emergent parties of Podemos and Ciudadanos, but the initiative fell apart.
In the repetition of elections in June 2016, the PSOE recorded its worst result since the restoration of Spanish democracy in 1977. Sánchez was defenestrated by an internal rebellion of his party, which blamed him for the poor results at the polls.
