Selecting a puppy can be an exciting thing as well as a scary thing. Due to when picking out a puppy, you are picking out an animal that will hopefully be in your life for many years. So you want to make sure you make the right choice for you. When selecting a puppy, you first need to decide what sort of breed or characteristics you want.
Me for example, I want a dog that has energy, (but not too much) great with people, kids, and other animals. I chose a lab, which fits all these characteristics. The lab I chose to have in my life is now 11 going on 5 lol. Even though he is older he still has some playful energy in him, and loves to go on walks. However, with a lab they are prone to ear infections, allergies and shedding. So if you do not want these you may want to consider getting something else. I recommend going online and searching for the breed you are looking for, and research what their personalities are like, if they are easy to train, how well do they get along with other animals, people, and what health concerns you may need to be on the lookout for.
Then you need to find a breeder, which is tricky and expensive. I could talk a lot about bad breeding, and what you need to be on the lookout for, but I think your local veterinarian would be the better choice. They may even know a good breeder that they could recommend for you. If you are not looking for a purebred, then you should check out your local shelter. I would try to find a shelter that does fostering, because to me if you rescue a dog that was in a foster home, the family that fostered the dog are going to know quite a bit about them, and help you decide if this is the right dog for you. Vs going into a shelter and picking a dog that has been in a kennel for awhile, and no one really knows what their like could be risky.
When selecting a puppy, age is very important. I think the best age is 7-8 weeks. They are eager to learn, and everything is new to them. So this is the best time to show them that the world is not scary. I hope that whatever decision you make, is a good one, and I also hope that your puppy lives a long healthy life.
