My Purge Attempt

in purge •  6 years ago  (edited)

I know a lot of people have left. That's the word on the Steem platform anyway. I kind of forget about most of the people who aren't here. I really don't notice unless it's someone I interact with all the time - and for me that's only a handful of people. Maybe that is a flaw on my part, I don't know.

Feeling like a bit of a perfectionist, I was pondering over why the number of comments on my posts have been lower than they used to be, especially the last post I created, and my last ulog. I thought of different possibilities as to why. Weigh in on this if you want with all honesty, I won't break. 😜

Maybe it's because occasionally I swing from daily, or almost daily posting, to taking a break when I run out of ideas. During my absences, I'll throw in a steepshot post once a week or so to show I'm still alive. I'm inconsistent, and that's a big no-no.

My posts are only appealing to a few people? I lost my edge. They aren't interesting enough.

I'm doing something wrong?? I'm missing the mark.... I've gotten lazy, and I'm not connecting with people. Not with newbies, and not with some of the people who are still here... I rarely pay attention to who is coming in and joining @thealliance. I don't even know half the people there anymore. How embarrassing! I need to step it up a notch! Am I not understanding or have I forgotten proper etiquette?

People don't like me/my beliefs? They judge me? Or maybe they just like other people better? Did I piss some people off without knowing it?

I'm not part of a team endeavor. It seems like everyone has a task or a job, or they fit into place somewhere doing something in a group setting. Volunteers for charities, curation groups, moderators in discord, collaborators for this and that. I've never pursued any of this really. Maybe that's my problem...

There are less people here. Yes! There are less people here, therefore less interaction! That makes me feel a lot better about myself. Hmm...I wonder how many people I follow aren't here any more. I'm going to delete everyone who has been gone for a month or more, and see how many people I have left.

See how the mind works sometimes? The brain can be a pretty scary place!! This is anxiety in motion.

So I jumped into the tedious task of purging, starting with letter A, and after 45 minutes of checking individual accounts, one by one, I unfollowed 37 people, for no reason other than inactivity. It would have been 39, but I spared the 2 people who introduced me to this place, because I know them personally. It was very sad to visit some of these accounts, remembering the unique contributions they used to give us.

Yes, 37 unused accounts. I started with 727, and I now follow 690. Here's the caveat though:

So far, I have only made it through letter C!!!

In fact, I unfollowed more people than I kept around!

Not to sound like an alarmist, but...

Are we dying?

How do we fix this?

Any killer accounts I should be following? Because pretty soon I'm not going to be following very many people...

I'll be resuming this task later. It's going to take forever. 😨 I'm determined though. It must be done!

Love, snowpea ❤

P.S. I'll be starting a challenge tomorrow or Monday, called Steem And Me: 5 Questions Answered. I'm hoping for a lot of participation, so I can tally the responses into statistics that represent as much of the Steem community as possible. You answer 5 questions pertaining to your experience in a post, tag others(optional), and use the tag steemandme. If you're interested, let me know in the comments, and I'll make sure to tag you when it starts.

It's not you it's me, or rather the lack of interaction isn't your posts it's the general lack of time people have to get around and comment on so many.

Certainly from my perspective finding the time to do my own posts, keep up with Witness stuff, work full time and do family things doesn't leave much gap to physically comment on posts - an I have 100's of people I would like to keep up with.

I'm going to keep an eye out for your new contest thing - that sounds awesome and I will definitely join in.

I don't know how you do it all as it is @c0ff33a! You certainly are able juggle a lot. Thanks for stopping by here!

I was hoping some witnesses would participate! It's awesome to have you on board! If you are curious to know what the questions are in advance, I shared them in the general section at the castle yesterday. 🙂😘

This is what happens when the population density is so low.
People can only express their support of you so many times before it gets repetitive.
The best of them are here, mostly lurking.

People can only express their support of you so many times before it gets repetitive.

I can see how that may be the reason. Or one of the reasons anyway. Hopefully we have a healthier ecosystem soon.

Thanks for your input! :)

This resonates with me so well. There is a combination of factors I think. I have noticed a significant drop in interaction on my posts which comes from so many people having quit on steemit but also my own motivation has dropped.
It's difficult to keep the pace I have been for the past year and you start to feel burnout. And then on top of that the price of steem has been under a dollar now for months.. this all add up and people leave in droves.

but you can't help but look at your own posts and wonder 'why is no one commenting? is it me? what did i do?' and that can be very self destructive.

There's truth in what you are saying. Hopefully we recover from all of this. It's disheartening, but yeah, overthinking it won't help either. Thanks for stopping by! :)

For sure, it's not the first dip steem has had and those that toughed it out last time have done quite well. Just need to persevere :)

Consider only 8% of Americans use crypto. I think really what's happening here is that people come and go. Realize how bad other social media is and try to come back?

Idk, for various reasons been taking breaks. But glad to see a post from you!

Glad to see you here @ihashblox! It seems that when people leave and come back, their accounts rarely return to having the same success. And even taking breaks like we do is harmful. That's gotta be part of my problem lol.

The purging is necessary and I am probably overdue myself for another one. There were a few in my last one who I hold very dear so kept them on. But, sadly, they still have not returned.

I think some of it is why people are here. Was it only for the money? Did they believe it was instant wealth as the scammers like Jerry promised? Or did they start off well and it tapered down with the devaluation happening in crypto?

I would also ask how much they brought with them. I have unfollowed many since coming here because I can't waste an upvote on someones picture of their cheeseburger for lunch. Although I have given out about 5 such votes since coming here, but only because I treasured the individual who made it.

Some I think will be something I noticed from the aol days. One day they just don't come back, and you never know what happened to them. Sad.

It is hard to pinpoint individual reasons for leaving. Some people I followed who left were at one point in the alliance, and they ignored the attempts at reaching out to them when they disappeared. I would love to ask some of them why...

I'm still here, still commenting still blogging. A lot of people have left, but they'll all come back once Steem is back over a dollar. This is the time to gather up the STEEM.

I did a major purge, it may be time to purge again. No point following someone who doesn't ever post!

I'm glad you're sticking around. We're diehards! When you did your purge did you have to start over at A again when you left each person's page, or do you know a way around that? That's one of the most annoying parts.

I recently did the same even though I left some people who were not active in the past 2-3 months, hoping they will come back.

I recommend you using steem agency by @SirCork where you can see the list of dead followers and following the dead so you don't have to go through it name by name. :)

Steem agency will make everything much easier. Thank you @nikolina!

ej we have all been there, so dont feel bad! Lack of interaction by me goes in phases I have to say. Sometimes I am happy to be able to only pump out a post, other days there is some time and I can really scroll through all posts and gets come nice comments going on.

But indeed, the platform is emptier, but that doesnt have to be a bad thing honestly. I find the interaction that IS there is more genuine, and that might even be more valuable

You make a great point - and also less spam! Thanks for stopping by! :)

I did this a couple of weeks ago... I can't remember who suggested it or what the website was, but it would list the accounts that you followed that were likely inactive... See if I can dredge it up... It's better than doing it by hand!

@snowpea @bengy ... the site is called http://steem.agency

I did the same some time ago... got to about 'E' over 2 or 3 days before finding out about http://steem.agency :-)

That's the one!... Bendy? Lol!

wahahaha... swear I didn't type that :-)

Ha ha... You edited! Now I look like a crazy person...

wahahahaha... indeed :P

Awesome! So I don't need to spend 1000 hours going through all the people I'm following?? You made my day! :D

You found it!

I did! Saw it right after I replied to yours lol!

If there is an easier way, I would LOVE to try it. Thanks @bengy! :)

LOL - I follow 100 and that is more than I can keep up with - but yeah people have buggered off because of the low payouts.

If it all recovers we will be overlords!

Brutal, but it's a great way to improve your newsfeed! I really have to be careful about who I follow in the first place, because it's hard to hit that unfollow button, unless they are inactive. There is a lot of lameness on my feed though LOL.

I recognized so much in this post! The why, the how, the what... I too purged a lot of accounts and was equally shocked at how many were inactive - also accounts that were simply so good at creating high quality content and that I know for sure would have made big fat dolphin status by now if they simply had kept posting once a day!

Such a shame.

I'm following you now, I'm from the Alliance too but also feel like it's impossible to get to know everyone - I'm a 'newer' member of only two months old or so haha.

See you around and good luck purging D-Z ;-)

So glad I'm not the only one to experience these things @soyrosa! It's nice to meet you! Following you back. :)

:D I'm not going inactive for the forseeable future, so that's a start! :D
