Aldi aiming to quadruple its number of stores around UK in ambitious high street takeover plans

Boss Matthew Barnes has spoken out about the firm's rapid expansion plans which could see a branch on every street corner

German food store Aldi has revealed plans to expand its UK presence under a new vision that could see it open up to eight stores in some British towns.

The budget discounter, which previously announced a target to reach 1,000 stores by 2022, told the Grocer magazine of an ambitious plan to open a minimum of 1,300 by that point - the same number of stores as Sainsbury's - or one per 30,000 people.

Speaking about Aldi's 1,000 target, chief executive of Aldi, Matthew Barnes, told The Grocer magazine: "I think there is massively more potential than that.

"If you look at the population, we think not only could we have a store in every town and city, but for every 25,000 to 30,000 people."

With the UK’s population standing at 65 million that would equate to 2,600 stores across the country.

Such an expansion would see Aldi go toe to toe with Tesco, which has around 2,700 supermarkets and convenience stores in the country.

 Asda meanwhile, has just 525.

Barnes added: “We have 700 stores now and 300 sites already approved on our books. And there are 600 town locations where we don’t have a store; in many of which we could easily have two, three or four stores.

"We don’t have a store in Watford, [but] that would be a six to eight Aldi town."
