Why Posting Subpar Content Can Lead to Less Followers

in quality-posting •  8 years ago  (edited)

What happened?

Recently after posting something of personally subpar content, I lost a couple of followers. I know. I know. It's not the end of the world, I could definitely come back and gain followers through writing better posts, but I did not want to make this a habit. It's like taking a bite out of the cookie jar, the first one might not seem that bad but after eating thousands of cookies you realize that you are starting to have health problems. One or two bad posts might not hit your reputation that bad in the long run, but once it becomes a habit and you start posting things that don't represent your unique outlook, and you just start posting things induced by greed, people will not be interested in you anymore and will probably want you to stop clogging up their feed.

Keep a personal scale of quality

I recently released my first Steemit based application SteemIQ which provides an intelligent way of testing the quality of your writing. A couple of weeks back I saw a statistic that showed that Steemit had the most intelligent user base out of any of the main social networks. When we post content on Steemit that has no external value, no positive impact we are just becoming like other social networks, where the majority of people post memes (though I have nothing against memes) and bad content. Below is the personal scale that I use for quality control:

Level 0 : Delete right away

  • Very little to no textual content
  • Does not encourage conversation
  • Spreads negativity, or wastes a reader's time

Level 1 : Keep it but it could be better

  • Contains textual content, but often does not do as great of a job that it could have of describing the subject
  • The content is of a neutral subject which has no impact on the reader
  • Encourages very little conversation
  • Has little positive externalities

Level 2 : Good content

  • Contains textual content that does a decent job of describing the subject
  • The content is of a positive subject
  • Encourages conversation regarding different facets of the subject
  • Leads to critical thinking and has positive externalities

Level 3 : Great content

  • Contains well written textual content that does a great job of describing the subject in a comprehensible manner
  • The content is of a positive subject
  • Encourages multiple conversations regarding the subject, and also can lead to similar posts by other users
  • Leads to multiple posts expounding upon the same content

Just like the justice system weighs different aspects of a case in court, I weigh different facets of my writing and thinking so that I can get better and produce even better quality content.

Realization that everything is on the blockchain so it can't be taken back

Writing on Steemit is like writing with a permanent marker, someone can always go back and see what you wrote and what you edited, because everything is on the blockchain for everyone to see. Even though the content may not be available to viewers on Steemit.com one can definitely go to a site such as Steemd and figure out what you wrote by looking at your history on the blockchain.

Conclusion

I want to thank all of my readers for their continued support, and to take this post as my personal promise to you to always expect high quality content from me. I am never going to settle for a subpar post anymore.

Thank You
~Np

This is true. You should always put 100% effort into everything you do. And I'll tell you something else, watching my follower list grow inspires me to make my posts even better! If I start to lose followers I'll realize I've done something wrong.

I'm new and have posted very little content as of yet. I have been very actively commenting and upvoting with some progress. I guess my strategy is to get to know the creators here and learn the ropes.

Very good advice...I learned from this post. Thank you.

I have what I feel will be very good content and graphics, but want to build a following and follow before posting too much.

I have read a lot of people commenting that new members of Steemit should definitely curate content by commenting and upvoting as much as possible to better acquaint themselves with the community and hot its structured. If you are doing that, I think that you are definitely on the right path of becoming successful on Steemit. Thanks for the comment, and you got my follow! :)

I've noticed this myself. I shot ya follow because I like the way you outlined this. I'd like to be a new supporter of you!!

Thank you for the follow! I followed back and look forward to seeing content from you as well :)

Awesome meta analysis of the consequences and externalities involved in posting online. Great to see people looking at the big picture and asking the hard questions.
