We started prepping about 6 years ago in case of storms or some event that would make it to where we would have to rely on our own abilities to survive. Since that time we have moved more to a homestead operation to become more self sufficient and get back to a simpler life style.
We moved from the suburbs to what we thought was going to be a more rural area to raise our livestock and gardens.
Now it seems the city has moved with us.
We arrived at our current property about 3 years ago and in the time we have been here we have installed our chicken coup, fruit trees and garden beds. My wife has learned to can and preserve much of what we grow. I am still in the process of building a space for our larger aquaponics system. We have had great success with these systems in the past.
Our chickens provide eggs for our family and some to sell, we have not had any success in hatching any of the eggs but it has not been our push to do so yet either. We did process some fryers earlier this year to put meat in the freezer, we learned we needed to have more to last a year for us. Veggies were good this year as we dried a lot of the zucchini tomatoes and yellow squash. Strawberries we lost most of them last year to moles so I have to replant that crop. Black Berries bush we planted last year has taken off very nice and they produced some this year, next year will be a much better crop.
I am still struggling with grapes, I have managed to keep them alive for 2 years now but they do not seem to grow very much, I will have to do more learning on those.
Still working on a solar system for the chicken coup and the rain catchment systems around the house. There is always something to work on or learn around here. It is what makes this lifestyle enjoyable.
Well I wanted to put a post on here to get things started. This is a place where I can put my experience and my thoughts. Perhaps someone will learn from my blunders or at least get a laugh who knows.
