The gospel of Saint Matthew recounts the beginning of the journey of Jesus from Galilee to Jerusalem, where later he would make his triumphal entry.
And during this trip, Jesus gave many teachings and among these, the rewards promised to the disciples, because many wondered what their fate would be for leaving everything and following the messiah. And in this way, Jesus answered the disciples about the future rewards: "And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life" Matthew 19:29.
But then Jesus continued this teaching but doing it in a different way, and so to better illustrate his disciples he told them about the Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard; and with these words, the parable began: "For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard" Matthew 20:1.
This beautiful parable alludes to what the attitude towards God should be for those who choose to be servants of the Kingdom of God, the empire or dominion of God's perfections. The poverty of spirit, that is, an attitude of humility of heart, is the essential requirement to be a worker in the Lord's vineyard, because as Jesus taught with a beautiful quote, as the ending of the parable: "So the last will be first, and the first will be last" Matthew 20:16.
With this beautiful story, the Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard, Jesus wanted to instruct the disciples that eternal life, the contemplative life, which is the most important reward for a disciple or follower of the Lord, requires a total surrender of the heart, no one can enter into the Kingdom of God for selfish reasons or spiritual curiosity, but for the fear of God.
