#GreenQuote of the Week
No trees, No water. No Water, No life.
@mr-greens 2019
This week is the week of water but we want to begin this week with a quote about trees and water. We all know the importance of trees!
If trees are that important, why aren’t we planting trees?
Trees are the lungs of the land; they give us oxygen and purify the air we breathe.
Trees are our homes, they gives us wood for all our furniture and construction.
Trees are our medicine; they purify the water and provide us with medicine.
Trees are food; they give us wonderful fruits and food we enjoy.
The role of trees in water conservation is very important. Trees help preserve and manage water in several ways. First, their leaves and bark intercept and store an amazing amount of water. Although the quantity varies with tree type and size, one tree can store 100 gallons or more of water after 1-2 inches of rainfall. Part of this intercepted water will slowly be released to the soil below and part will evaporate into the air. Tree roots also store water which will eventually be released into the atmosphere through transpiration or into the soil below.
Trees and other small vegetation return nearly 70% of rain back into the air which then maintains the water or rain cycle. Without trees the interior parts of continents would become deserts, such as in Australia and Africa were deforestation has led to minimal rainfall.
Trees also help redistribute and clean water by retaining stormwater runoff. Trees prevent flooding from storms by trapping water in their leaves, trunks, and roots. One mature tree can potentially intercept 1,000 gallons of water a year.
Some studies estimate that urban forests can reduce annual runoff by 2-7 percent and with strategic tree landscaping, nearly 65% of storm runoff can be reduced in residential areas.
Additionally, trees improve water quality by trapping water that would normally run-off into waterways, carrying with it soil that contains sediments and nutrients. This explains why water catchment areas should be green and almost completely covered with trees and vegetation. Finally, trees help collect and filter water for local aquifers and watersheds that replenish the groundwater needed to supply drinking water for much of the world’s population.
No trees, no water. No water, no life
#Call2Action
The Greens is a grassroots environmental organization that strives to educate, inspire and engage young people to take action to combat climate change and be at the forefront of biodiversity conservation and waste management.
Founded in 2010, @thegreens have been able to use arts, sports, media and ICT to educate and engage more than 10,000 young people in Green Poetry, Green Music, Green Arts, Green Radio, and Conservation Champions League.
Her tree planting programs have seen the organization create 04 Community Tree Nurseries, planted more than 300,000 trees and together with @kedjom-keku we have acquired 1000 hectares of afromontane forest in Kedjom-Keku Village of the Bamenda Highlands of the North West Region of Cameroon for the creation and conservation of Kedjom-Keku Community Forest
@thegreens is currently engaged in Waste Management (Waste Business Hub); Plastic Waste Upcycling, Tire Upcycling and Textile Waste Recycling via @ecodesigns.
Her #EndPlasticPollution Campaign has seen the organization sensitize more than 100,000 people about plastic pollution, upcycled more than 10,000 plastic bottles to create UPB Vertical Gardens, UPB Tree Nursery Pots, etc.
Her Textile Recycling Project (@ecodesigns) is currently training 13 young girls for free in textile recycling and fashion designing and has recycled more than 5000 pounds of textile waste.
Her Tire Upcycling Project is educating and engaging young people in schools and communities to #StopBurningTires and upcycle them to create Mushroom Tire Seats, Tire Flower Pots, etc
Support us to continue to educate, inspire and engage young people to take action to combat climate change and be at the forefront of biodiversity conservation and waste management.
