The following are my favorite quotes from Italian diplomat, politician, historian, philosopher, humanist, and writer of the Renaissance period, Niccolò Machiavelli (3 May 1469 – 21 June 1527)

  1. The first method for estimating the intelligence of a ruler is to look at the men he has around him.

  2. Politics have no relation to morals.

  4. Never attempt to win by force what can be won by deception.

  5. The promise given was a necessity of the past: the word broken is a necessity of the present.

  6. Men in general judge more from appearances than from reality. All men have eyes, but few have the gift of penetration.

  8. A man who is used to acting in one way never changes; he must come to ruin when the times, in changing, no longer are in harmony with his ways.

  9. The lion cannot protect himself from traps, and the fox cannot defend himself from wolves. One must therefore be a fox to recognize traps, and a lion to frighten wolves.

  10. If an injury has to be done to a man it should be so severe that his vengeance need not be feared.

great quotes....

Which one is your favorite?

They are all very good quotes - very realistic. He is either a very good diplomat/politician or a very unscrupulous one. Either way, he is a very wise man who knows the human nature. If I have to choose one to be my favourite, it would be number 5 - The promise given was a necessity of the past: the word broken is a necessity of the present. Cheers!

Yeah that's a good one

Selling cynism by the pound, the old Nicolò... I had goosebumps reading some of those quotes. I found that 2-3-4-5 are some creepy life lessons that i would hardly give my daughter... even though of course they rule the present world. (This does not mean that they are right) What do you hink about those?

Yeah very cynical and for people with no soul those are great lessons.
