The Bitcoin Podcast Ep 86: Discussing race & diversity amongst the tech space

in racism •  8 years ago

Hi, one of you guys said that race is a human construction, unlike ethnicity. Actually both are social constructions, just like countries, languages , patriotism.

Unfortunately another individual said that "different races do different things better "
That is the exact definition of racism. It is also quite wrong.

Racism

  1. " a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race "

Just sayin .

I think we somewhat addressed that after it was said. Corey (the person typing this) said that attributing these things to race is a mis-appropriation of the experiences and priorities of that culture. If I didn't say that, I certainly meant to give that idea. There are also genetic differences associated with the gene pools of different cultures, which give certain potential advantages, which then may or may not get expressed through environmental triggers...

Ya know, the whole nature vs. nurture battle. If that message didn't get portrayed, then I failed in my attempt to explain my ideas, which is easy to do with some people, for all of this is a touchy subject to some.

I understand, I guess what I meant was 2 things.
One is that all of this is human-created constructions. ( Check out the book 'Sapiens' )
The other is that be careful of how this sounds .
But as far as genetics, yes, there are differences.
Like height, skin, body type etc.
But are there any studies showing that any of the gentetic differences correlate to the social, behavioral and higher human traits. Is genetic research even that advanced yet?
If we can not solve the nature nurture debate, and if we just discovered epigenetics, then how the hell can we say that this group of genes is lazy and this group of genes is good at math??

Bu the way, I like the show, just got into it a few weeks ago, and I started more than one bitcoin/blockchain podcast at the same time.
But I seriously appreciate the work and I like the show. Please keep it up.
