When it comes to Juneteenth, I keep reading the phrase "when the news finally reached Texas." Let's be crystal clear about something. Slavery was abolished in Texas, and white people knew it. They simply opted not to inform the Black community. On Juneteenth, the African-Americans learned the truth for the first time. We accept the euphemisms as gospel because history has been so whitewashed. The messenger didn't have to wait 2 1/2 years to deliver the news. Texas was not forgotten by the rest of the Union. Nobody said anything when white Texans got away with retaining their slavery way of life for an extra two years. Yes, #Juneteenth should be a federal holiday, but we should also be teaching #CriticalRaceTheory in our schools so that we don't end up with watered-down versions of history.
