H&M Scandal: a change of perspective

in racism •  7 years ago

It seems as though the H&M controversy over a little dark skin boy wearing a sweater that states “coolest monkey in the jungle”, had a great part of the world questioning H&M’s company’s integrity. Are they racist? Didn’t they see this would be causing a problem to the public’s eye? Did they just not care? 14A1694B-5E9F-4BD7-8B28-EF5F55C45CAF.jpeg
I personally was just about as outraged as r&b artist The Weeknd whom stopped working with H&M after this became aware. I assumed the company knew this would make plenty of people outraged and set us back in society as it’s proving there are still people out there discriminating humans based on their race despite us all being the same. I was very enraged by this photo until a change of perspective came to me as I was having a conversation with my manager at work about random issues and this topic arose.
WHAT IF.....
H&M really saw no issue with the black child being in a sweater that says coolest monkey in the jungle. For example, in my opinion I believe the child’s mom would have had to be there cheering him on and approving the outfit choice therefore she also didn’t see an issue with it. Also, just as my manager opened my eyes up to is the fact that we call most little kids monkeys. Why? Not because they all have the same skin colour and look like an animal but because little kids have the ENERGY of monkeys. So, maybe H&M we’re trying to get that point across to just see this young boy as a young boy being silly and playing like a monkey and not relate anything regarding racism to this.
This is Taylor Holloway with my viewpoint of the world, thank you and keep reflecting positivity!
