Radeon Pro Vega II Duo: the exclusive dual GPU card for Apple

One of the novelties associated with the launch of the latest Apple Mac Pro solutions is related to the video industry: indeed, the American company has selected to continue its cooperation with AMD by providing two alternatives that are formally launched on the market.

The models Radeon Pro Vega II and Radeon Pro Vega II Duo are based on Vega GPUs constructed with 7-nanometer manufacturing technology, with 32 Gbytes of HBM2 memory versus 16 Gbytes coupled with the Radeon VII desktop card. The GPU provides a total of 4,096 stream processors for both cards, with a maximum clock frequency of 1.7 GHz and a video memory bandwidth of up to 1 TB / s per GPU.

Unlike the Radeon VII card, the GPUs used in the Radeon Pro Vega II and Radeon Pro Vega II duo cards introduce all the 64 computing units current in the GPU, such as the 14-nanometer-built Vega 64 card. 60 active computer devices are available for Radeon VII, for a total of 3,840 stream processors.

The Radeon Pro Vega II Duo board integrates two separate GPUs on the same PCB, linked by a bridge as well as a dedicated InfinityFabric connection providing a bandwidth of 84.5 GB / s between the two GPUs. For this card, Apple and AMD have introduced some unique techniques: the elevated consumption of the two GPUs actually needed the use of a fresh PCI Express connector, capable of providing the card with up to 475 Watts in relation to the 75 Watts of the traditional 16x PCI Express connector. The card does not introduce any kind of traditional energy connection thanks to this connector, such as the 8-pin and 6-pin connectors we usually see on the market in the video cards. It is also embedded with the Thunderbolt 3 controller, with which you can connect up to 4 screens simultaneously. It is probable that AMD will make the Radeon Pro Vega II card accessible for products other than Apple Mac Pro; for the Radeon Pro Vega II Duo declination, on the other side, it is an exclusive Apple that will not be given to any other comp, also owing to the specific power supply scheme.
