Raijin: From the Depths of Darkness to the Roar of Storms in Japanese Mythology (雷神)

• In the myths recorded in the Kojiki, after Izanami died from the wounds inflicted on her by the birth of Hinokagutsuchi, her body ended up in Yemi no Kuni, the realm of death and darkness. There, from the eight parts of her body, Raijin was born, who in the kingdom of darkness was initially called Ho-no-Ikazuchi-no-Kami.

• Another legendary story describes Raijin as a demon who created a terrible storm and caused destruction. Then the Mikado ordered Sugaru (translated as Catcher of Gods) to capture Raijin and take him to the imperial prison to stop the storm. Sugaru first approached Raijin with a request on behalf of the emperor to stop the storm, but Raijin only laughed at him.
