Ramadan Kareem! Though neither me nor my closest friends are fasting this Ramadan, for health reasons or social reasons (it is brutally hard to do fasting on your own in a country that doesn't really care about anything but vodka, church and bribery) my today's post is strictly connected to the period of Ramadan, the holy Islamic month.
As most of people know, Ramadan is the period of fasting. No eating and drinking during the day. No use of recreational drugs, tobacco, alcohol, no parties. It's a time of purification of the mind, body and soul. But it's an intermittent fasting. Meaning the 16 hours of the day people do not consume anything (not even water!) and the 8 hour gap after the sunset is the feasting.
People spend most of their night time with their families, turning more into the "traditional" way of spending their time. In front of the TV. Among plenty entertaining shows and soap operas that are being aired on this month, this year there is something very unusual and revolutionary for the middle east.
A former Egyptian surgeon, now tv presenter and a comedian Bassem Youssef, the creator of a famous first Egyptian political-satiric show El-Bernameg (the Show), has released a new show that is revolutionary (again!) considering the cultural background of the countries he's aiming at. What's so revolutionary about his show now? Bassem is vegan and promotes the plant-based diet to his nation that recently struggles with obesity on a scale comparable to US.
Let me introduce you to the first episode of his new show, "Plant B". Presented in his hilarious, but very wise way that will answer all your questions about the proteins, fats, the vitamin B12 and iron in a vegan diet.
The video is in Arabic with English subtitles.
Of course with a show promoting vegan lifestyle comes a site with vegan recipes and more about planning a balances plant-based diet https://www.plantb.tv/
And as nobody is doing anything outstanding without being challenged to - Bassem offers a 21 day vegan diet challenge to try and find out how it is to be a vegan.
Stay vegan 🌱
