Random China #1 - always locate the emergency exit

in randomchina •  7 years ago

Today I arrived in Shanghai, after a long absence. I'm overly tired (11 hours not being able to sleep on the plane, and then a transfer in Hong Kong which included 20 minute run to get from one side of the airport to the other) so won't write too much today. But wanted to start my #randomchina posts asap.

This idea originated with @dbooster, who has been doing an amazing series of '#randomjapan' and who encouraged me to use photography to make sense of the weirdness I'm encountering while in China. Because weirdness is based on the viewer, not reality itself. And photography is a great way to show what you see.

I went to a mall, to get some essential things, like towels and baking soda & apple vinegar to be able to wash my hair tonight. It's a larger store, one floor downstairs with all kinds of shops and sellers trying to talk to you. You just have to wade your way through to the escalators, and then go up. There a large store begins, first floor all non-food, and then you need to use a hidden escalator to go to the second floor, a huge space with lots of food and fresh vegetables etc.

This picture I took, it's close to the exit, when you've paid and gone down two floors and have to walk through some lonely corridors. This was all of a sudden to the side of the building.

That's kind of creepy. Looks like a lot of water damage down below; do the sandbags keep the water from pooling on the floor?

Creepy, but at least they have a garbage can!

Water damage, that sounds positive and less creepy than what I thought.

What, did you think they were bags of human organs or something?

Could be.

I suppose they have to fill their crab rangoon with something when they run out of crab.

I was also wondering about the padlock on the door...
