RAPAI is a traditional percussion instrument of Aceh which is included in the frame drum family, which is played by being beaten by hand without using a stick. RAPAI is often used in traditional ceremonies in Aceh such as wedding ceremonies, circumcision of apostles, night markets, dances, anniversaries, birthdays and so on, and is an integral part of the life of the people of Aceh both philosophically or culturally. Rapai play the role of tempo, rhythm, tingkahan, jangling and make the atmosphere becomes more lively and festive. It supports choruses (melodies) from Serune Kalee or buloh longs (blowing instruments beratonval diatonic tones).
RAPAI adalah alat musik perkusi tradisional Aceh yang termasuk dalam keluarga frame drum, yang dimainkan dengan cara dipukul dengan tangan tanpa menggunakan stick. RAPAI sering digunakan pada upacara-upacara adat di Aceh seperti upacara perkawinan, sunat rasul, pasar malam, mengiringi tarian, hari peringatan, ulang tahun dan sebagainya, dan merupakan bagian yang tak terpisahkan dari kehidupan masyarakat Aceh baik secara filosofïs atau kultural. Rapai berperan mengatur tempo, ritmik, tingkahan, gemerincing serta membuat suasana menjadi lebih hidup dan meriah. Alat itu mendukung chorus (melodi) dari Serune Kalee atau buloh merindu (alat tiup berinterval nada diatonis).
There is a pameo that is often heard containing "peunajoh timphan, piasan rapai" which means Acehnese special food is a timpan (a kind of rice cake in it contains coconut and palm sugar, or contains sarikaya / rich egg aso, wrapped in young banana leaves and steamed), then piasan rapai which is defined as an entertainment musical instrument is reach.
Ada pameo yang sering terdengar berisikan “peunajoh timphan, piasan rapai” yang artinya makanan khas orang Aceh adalah timpan (sejenis kue dari bahan tepung beras di dalamnya berisi kelapa dan gula aren, atau berisi sarikaya/aso kaya telur, dibungkus dengan daun pisang muda dan dikukus), kemudian piasan rapai yang diartikan sebagai alat musik hiburan adalah rapai.
Based on the poetry script sung with RAPAI, this instrument comes from Syeh Abdul Kadir Jailani, the great scholar of fiqh from Persia who lived in Baghdad from 1077 to 1166 AD (470-560 Hijriah). The poem mentioned it:
Berdasarkan naskah syair yang dinyanyikan bersama RAPAI, alat musik pukul ini berasal dari Syeh Abdul Kadir Jailani, ulama besar fiqih dari Persia yang hidup di Baghdad dari tahun 1077 hingga 1166 Masehi ( 470-560 Hijriah). Syair itu menyebut :

Rapai was taken by an Islamist broadcaster from Baghdad called Sheikh Rapi (one of whom called Sheikh Rifai) and played for the first time in the Capital of the Kingdom of Aceh, Banda Khalifak (now Gampong Pandee, Banda Aceh) around the 11th century.
Rapai dibawa oleh seorang penyiar Islam dari Baghdad bernama Syeh Rapi (ada yang menyebut Syeh Rifai) dan dimainkan untuk pertama kali di Ibukota Kerajaan Aceh, Banda Khalifak (sekarang Gampong Pandee, Banda Aceh) sekitar abad ke-11.
Rapai is played in an ensemble of 8 to 12 players called a crew and paired with other instruments such as serale kalee or buloh longs. The game of the Rapai ensemble can reach the hearing from a distance due to the reflected echoes and does not require a microphone for every performance even at night in the countryside can reach hearing from a distance of 5-10 km.
Rapai dimainkan secara ensemble yang terdiri dari 8 sampai 12 orang pemain yang disebut awak rapai dan disandingkan dengan instrumen lain seperti serune kalee atau buloh merindu. Permainan dari ensemble Rapai tersebut dapat menjangkau pendengaran dari jarak jauh akibat gema yang dipantulkannya dan tidak memerlukan microphone untuk setiap penampilannya bahkan pada malam hari di daerah pedesaan bisa mencapai pendengaran dari jarak 5-10 km.
