Rape Issues 28; How Family Members Should Treat A Rape Victim 3

in rape •  7 years ago  (edited)

The rape victim has suffered enough. She is already badly affected consequently if all she hears are bad or condemning words from people who should help her especially her parents, she feels all alone and tends to believe that no one cares.

This could prove destructive. Some rape victims were reported to have committed suicide as a result of this all around rejection and condemnation.

Family members should not persist in rubbing the face of the wound by accusing or reminding her of the sordid episode. This is not right, it is like opening up an old wound, it becomes fresh all over again.

What family members should rather do is to help her overcome her fears by comforting and encouraging her. If she said she was raped, believe she was raped. Reassure her she is still your sister, child or friend and tht you love her in spite of what happens. Take time to listen to her and be there for her.
