Any recommendations for magazines / websites for getting into robotics?

Also, if you want a super cool robotics idea, I recommend building a prusa 3d printer (https://www.reprap.org/wiki/Prusa_Mendel).

  • Plans are available online
  • Components are 90% obtainable through your local hardware store
  • Other 10% is the extruder and parts you need another 3d printer to print

Raspberry Pi is a typical microcontroller for Prusa 3d printers.

For robotics I recommend getting involved in local clubs. I live in a small town in USA, and we have several robotics clubs. These clubs are usually run by engineers and university professors. Magazines are great, but nothing can beat a regular face-to-face with experienced pros.

Plus, engineers have experience that will go beyond robotics into advanced topics that you wouldn't know exist if you didn't talk to an engineer like custom PCB printing and custom ROM programming.

This is a good answer.

Thanks so much both of y'all. I've been intimidated by the idea of robotics for a while but I think finding a local group that could help me get started would be awesome. I really appreciate the thoughtful answers

MagPi has some robotics but it's not really dedicated to it. It depends on how deep you want to get. The Lego Mindstorm/Vex are great kits for kids and robotics. As an adult or doing more complex robotics, I would look at tutorials for Raspberry Pi or Arduino.

Make is another good magazine but it does not have a free edition.

That's awesome, when I was a kid all you could make was a stupid burglar alarm and mine never worked.

It will be helpful, thank you!
