It’s surprising to me that it’s surprising to people.

We tolerate war, oppression, poverty and distress close to our home, and so many things that seem unethical, reprehensible, or just plain not optimized. It’s sort of a shock when we do care enough to solve any of that. We are doing more of that both in absolute numbers (of course) and percentage wise than ever before, or at least in the past 10,000 years.

We can do better but only if we focus at the meta level, on the processes and systems that solve problems for people.

Focusing on the problems themselves is slow and ineffectual.

People are very bad at dealing with slow-moving catastrophes. They're also particularly bad at thinking rationally about things that have become politicized. This one's both.
